detroit diver once bubbled...
So, basically, this thread was Bullsh*t from the very first premise.

Well, that was obvious.

I'm curious about what Lawman's thinking was, though. "Whoa look at all the gear those guys have! Wow! They must be DIR! Look how dumb they look!"

Hm...

edit: I also think that maybe Lawman has just never seen any diver rigged up to do a staged decompression dive, complete with doubles, a canister light, etc.

Maybe Lawman can teach us how to do such a dive properly without all that gear.. who needs doubles or stage bottles?

What wasn't obvious was that Lawman had no clue what he was talking about. For a person involved in the "law", he made a lot of assumptions that were just plain wrong.

In fact, it had NOTHING to do with DIR.

Thank you for the edit. I may have been tempted to reply a lot less nicely. You are right. Lawman and his buddy were in wetsuits and recreational gear. They were not doing staged decompression. They were doing a standard recreational dive safely. That was his right and preference.

The rest of us were geared for it as we wanted decent bottom time. That was our right and preference. And yes, maybe we did look dumb to him fully geared up. Oh well! I am sorry that he dragged the DIR crowd into his observation, but I can't do anything about that.

Don't worry about these guys. Detroit Diver is just
the resident grump. Brian knows his stuff but he has
a hard time explaining why he flys his Piper Cub wearing
a spacesuit.

Note: DD I don't really mean a spacesuit...it's a figure of
speech.

Chris if you hang around for a while you'll see why I have
to explain these things to DD.

Anyway, the opinion here is that even though you might be
equpted DIR you aren't REALLY DIR unless....something....

Welcome to the thread. The discourse is gas station, not
Oscar Wilde.:)

And that's precisely why Lawman has no clue what he is talking about.

Wearing a long hose and backplate does not make you DIR.

So in one stroke, he knocks DIR because of his misguided assumptions.

Let's start a new thread:

"I saw Lawman in a jail cell today, and boy, did he look terrible"

Meet Mike. He thinks every method of training divers
is B******. He knows that PADI is a front for Osama
bin Laden and is conspiring to kill us all. Don't argue
with him.If you argue with him thats PROOF that you
are part of the vast PADI moneygubbing conspiracy.
He's a good diver but not a happy man.:)

Apparently Lawman is the new oracle for what makes a DIR diver. Here is his definition:

"If you dive a long hose, or a backplate and wing, or doubles, or a canister light, or anything else I don't use or understand, then you are DIR."

what I meant. But, I think I do understand
the difficult concept of the backplate and canister.
I just think that people that make a fetish out of
this stuff and DIR are a little bit nuts.

If you want to wear all that crap complete with
a light that would work on a 747 go ahead. This
is America. You can act as strange as you want.
