You can go some ways down the ear as an OW diver. As long as you do not go through the restriction and stay in open water, you'll be fine. That even would be a challenge for some divers as the flow can catch people off guard.
Twice now I have taken OW divers out of the gallery. One was just lost and could not find the exit. The other was pinned in the ceiling just inside the Ear's entrance. The flow got him and he could not free himself.
OW divers have no business in overhead environments, guide or no guide.
