I understand the alienation point. However, the anchor was a near miss to one of my dive buddies which is not acceptable and would send the most cool headed person on a tear. With 4 of us yelling at him, he likely got the message and was indeed edumacated to avoid such situations in the future. We were semi-friendly when 2 of us first came up, that is, until my 3rd and 4th buddies came up and told me just how close the anchor came to them. They saw it come down and the vis was less than 20'. Too close for me.

I can take care of myself. An anchor to the head might knock in some sense actually... But if I got hit by a speeding boat while surfacing and it messed up my new Cobra or MK25/600, I would be down right ticked off!

Ritz Carlton patches-snorkeling only
Just south of Jupiter inlet Wreck of the Victor-snorkleling only
Gulf stream park-snorkeling only
Jap rock-snorkeling only
Red reef Park-snorkeling only
South inlet park-snorkleing only
Yankee Clipper rocks-snorkeling only

These are snorkeling only sites because they are all public city/county beaches with lifeguards. I don't know of any patrolled beaches that allow diving. I think it's a liability issue and they don't want to be responsible for divers.

Hollywood beach is a public, patrolled, city beach. Green St, Ho Jo's and off of Angelos are all popular scuba sites.

There are some reefs off of the patrolled area at Dania but you have to enter south of the beach at the dive area and swim north. You are swimming off of the patrolled area but you are out past where they allow swimmers to go.

My only concern is that by writing letters to Commisioners, mayors and city managers they will realize that people are diving from shore- a quarter mile to a half mile off their beaches.

They probably don't realize this or would prefer to stay uninfomed. They like to think sand, lots of sand, and waist deep swimming.

Once they are made aware of this by an e-mail or a letter or other document they cannot plead ignorance when someone is run over by a boat. They have to write rules to protect the city from liability. The ol CYA

To sum it up

Don't wake up sleeping rule makers I don't want to lose my shore sites.

That's about all I have to say on this one

Jonnyreb -- did you talk to the Coast Guard? Would they do anything if you were able to provide them with the registration numer off the bow of the boat?

I'll reiterate my point about boaters since I was one on FL waters all my life until I was in my early 20's, and now to be again.

Boaters should have to have a license to operate the vessel. You shouldn't even be able to get the boat registered without presenting a Boaters license, of which requires real live sea time on a boat under the supervision of an experienced captain (one of YEARS experience, not of the computer certification experience of 'oh, I read a book and passed the test'). Boat licenses should go in weight or length classes like trucks and air brakes. It only stands to reason that since you can get a DUI on the water, and you can get tickets, you should be licensed (or have a certificate in the aviation clouds) that you understand the rules of the water and that operation of a motor vessel is serious stuff. At 14 and driving my own boats around the waters, I was amazed at the idiots I observed on the waters and how careless they were. Today its no less.

To be honest, we need a good hurricane to clean out the trash and scare off the idiots. Those of us who are serious about where we live and understand its nature will take it in stride, survive, and carry on. The rest will leave.. leaving their mess for us to clean up - as usual.

Back in the early 70s the dive shops got together and funded a series of information posters at every A1A bridge and jetty from Government cut to at least Stewart. These were little posters about 24'x16' with 1' tall lettering explaining what a dive flag is and why to stay 300' away from one. For those not familiar with that coastline it was virtually impossible to pass into the ocean without passing within 75' of one of these "little" signs.

In the 3 years I lived there I was run over by 2 boats, and had my dive flag picked up twice. I was also run over by the USCG in an ocean going cutter that went between our anchor pendant flag and the one on the anchored boat!

Until such time as the idiot boater is, or can be, held responsible for his actions NOTHING will change. Divers are targets. Flying a dive flag on a beach or boat dive simply makes you a better target.

If the "officers" can't or won't write tickets for the courts to properly ignore, I wish the state would at least let me shoot back! I gather little comfort knowing the the worst that will happen to baoter that neglegently runs over me is that he will have to get his prop straightened once my hair is removed from it.

Fla dive flag laws are simply a revenue generator for the state from diver's fines. When the presence of .30 to .50" diameter holes in gelcoat or outboards is seen as the same level of proof the boat was too close to the diver's flag as the presence of spearguns on the boat in Pennecamp is for illegal "fishing" (even if there are no fish in the boat) I'll feel comfortable flying a dive flag. Until then I'll recognise I'm simply a cash cow to be harassesd by the politician and cover my own A$$.

And this post is exactly why im BUYING a bp from you. I like the way you think:)

My only question is that if these elected officials are doing a bad job or are not listening to the peoples voices who put them there, why are they re-elected? And what has been done lately to let them know of an issue?

I am not shy to take things to my county representative, especially if there is a problem impacting not just me but my neighbors and others in the district, and present the problem and what a possible solution could be. So far I am 2 for 2 with problems, 1 of 2 with my solutions being presented and responsible for a company being fined for breach of contract with the county (something I didnt know about before hand).

I'll be honest, I've contacted the county comissioner for that district, the city manager of Lauderdale by the Sea, the Mayor of Ft Lauderdale, the President of the Tourism Council and VP of Communications for the Tourisim council and voiced my concers about uneducated boaters not just running dive flags over and presenting a danger, but even cited johnnyreb's example of dropping anchor nearly on his group and into the reef itself. Why? Because if that anchor had hit a diver, or if the boat racing towards Jen's flag that had my wife and Jen under it, or Amellios flag with he and his cousin under it, chances are a diver could have been hurt by it. It could have been a scratch or it could have been death. In all these cases cited it, none of it would have been the divers fault, but uneducated boaters who shouldn't have been on the water in the first place. A cause I've felt worthy of attention since I was 14, and now, nearly 16 years later, have had it driven home personally that something needs to be done and I'll keep at it until something is.

We elect people based on good faith in hoping they do a good job. We pay them to do these jobs. We trust they make good decisions. If they aren't let them know. Call or write or make an appointment and see them personally. If they make themselves inaccessable, get them out, find someone else or do it yourself. Don't be surprised if I run at some point and know what? Divers rights and licensed boaters will be something I support!

Im not sure if your naive or just optimistic, but we are the minority, and unless the polititian gets something out of it, hes not likely to to put any effort into a law that only benifits the public.

My only question is that if these elected officials are doing a bad job or are not listening to the peoples voices who put them there, why are they re-elected?

Politicians draw voting districts in the US. The term "Gerrymandering" describes the process of drawing these districts for political gain. This process is "business as usual" in effectively every State in the Union. In local and most Federal elections below the Senate level this process is in control. The re-election rates due to political machine manipulation of the districts, and other methods, are over 90%. Most of those defeated are done so in PRIMARY elections. As a case in point check the changes in the Broward County Sheriff's Office in the 90's. It took a stealth campaign orchestrated by Broward county LEOs to 'unelect" a very crooked sheriff, in the Democratic PRIMARY! The odds of getting a Republican or Libertarian running against an incumbent Democrat elected to a county wide office in Broward or Palm Beach county is about the same as hitting the FL lottery twice in the same month! In the US it's not only possible to elect a dead man to office if he runs with the 'correct' party for the area, but it has actually happened several times. In Louisiana Edwin Edward's "winning" bumper sticker in his last statewide election was "VOTE FOR THE CROOK!" BTW Edwin is now vacationing at a "Club Fed."

The only good thing you can say for this system is that we get what we deserve in elected officials. The world is run by "Those who show up." Unless the "little people" actually start showing up we will continue on this route until it's necessary to do another "King George" eviction. This country is based on the "three boxes."

The "soap box" we have allowed to fall to the control of the big media conglomerates. The recent (98) debate and vote on concealed carry in MO shows the power of the media in local politics. Both the KC Star and the St Louis Post-Dispatch ran a significant misinformation campaign on the issue and presented the "anti" side's emotional fantasies as fact. Those two papers also "neglected" to carry any information on or from the "pro" side. The "yellow" of this journalism made the Kansas sunflower appear lilly white in comparison. Inside the circulation areas of those two papers the vote went 80% "against." Outside their circulation areas where a more balanced discussion was presented the vote went 80% "for." The "Media" claimed this was a "City Vs Country" thing, but the districts effected by the vote’s dichotomy track paper circulation patterns much better than population patterns.

The "ballot box" is a joke in many areas. Between voter fraud and apathy the "machines" control significant parts of the US. The "Elysian Fields" vote easily controls New Orleans politics. The very concept of a voter actually having to show ID to vote is fought tooth and nail by the Democrats in control of the MS legislature, with updating voter registration lists by cross checking death certificates and voter rolls actually prohibited! I won't even get into the effectively closed meetings where party candidates are "selected" by the few who run the machines.

Strangely enough the "Media" and "machines" have both worked hard to eliminate the third box. "Gun Control" is not, and never has been anywhere in the world it has been enacted, about "crime control." It has always been about removing the "Cartridge Box" option to politics as usual.

I have long said that the next American Revolution will not be to install a new government, but to RE-INSTALL the Constitutional government we should have had all along. I just hope it can happen through the first two boxes. I've lived through one period of blood in the streets shed at the hands of the PTBs. I'd REALLY like to avoid it in my future, and my kids’ future, if I have a choice.

Until such time as we again get control of our government I never miss a chance to vote against an incumbent, unless of course the challenger is worse and I need to vote against HIM!

I dont know if I should take that as an insult or pass it off as someone who has not successfully finished a fight regardless of the outcome. Think of me as optimistic.

Amazingly enough, my local state representative is actually based in WPB, and based on experience and the people who do back me, its time to draft something which can be presented to him to see if we can get it through legislature that boaters must be licensed before they can operate their vessels. You cant drive without one, you cant fly without one, you cant even get your air tanks filled at a shop without one.. what makes a boat exempt from having any requirements for operation? Nothing.

I'm not going to get into anything deep political, its a waste of time to debate it here and better saved for a public forum where live responses can be heard and the debatee's can be seen. Its just my view and opinion and that its about time something is done.
