Wendy:
Why is it that the people that are nice and will do anything for people are the ones that get stepped on and hurt time and time again? Sometimes I think being selfish and cold is the better way to go, at least I won't be hurt in the end.
Wendy, I believe you have answered your own question. People that are nice and do anything for people are the ones that get stepped on, and hurt, time and time again. When you chose to do something nice for someone did they ask you to do it, or did you do it because you thought you should?

When you do things for others, even with the best of intentions, at times it leaves you feeling empty because you did not get the immediate gratification you thought you deserved. Therefore, the feeling of betrayal, being deceived, and the feeling of being used, sets in.

The other may be to extreme; "being selfish and cold is the better way to go[.]" At this time it may sound like the right thing to say, but you will be doing yourself more harm than good!

I'm sure there's more to your story, but for now do not give away your golden eggs; they are very precious and most valuable!

Next time if you do something for anyone, ask yourself first, am I doing it because I should, or is expected of me, or am I doing it because I want to?

Wendy, guard your heart, but don't lock it away.

I second and third that!
