This instructor is NAUI, not TDI.

I know some old timers who do large single tank and deco bottle for deco dives around 130-140ft. You think no redundancy is a good idea for 180ft?

To me, the kit issues become a bigger thing with this deep of a dive.
Marie,

As you are taking AN/DP (and Heliox?), do a gas calculation for an 185’ dive for 13 minutes.....include Calcs for lost Deco and buddy gas....... see if a single 80 and a 40 are within standards.......

@Wookie

Do you have the same attitude towards CG regs? If it’s not your boat or a boat you’re on, doesn’t matter if the regs are followed or not?

If someone gets hurt or dies due to violated standards during a class, too bad, so sad, no skin off your nose?
Well, The only thing I can affect in my life is me. I have no time to be a busybody and look over my shoulder at what other people are doing with my boats. I will never be called into court to defend myself over another boat burning. I will also never be called into court to answer how another person died because some other instructor violated standards.

So no. If you want to build a boat out of a combustible material and burn it down and kill 34 passengers and crew, 4 of whom I know, I will never say a bad word about you. I will never call you out in a public forum and shame them. I might do so privately between myself and someone else who knows as much as I do about the situation, but I would never ever presume to butt into someone else's business and insert myself into it.

That’s funny. I’m doing AN/DP/Helitrox. I don’t need to do the math. Already know it’s a bad idea.

The old timers I know who will use a single large back tank for 130-140ft dives (along with a deco bottle) are using 120s and the like.

The occasional times I’m doing a deeper single tank dive, I’ll rent HP100 if I can get them. One of my HP80s isn’t enough for that, IMO. And I’ll carry an AL40 for redundancy.

@Marie13 you need to be careful as you’re on a dangerous path here ... keep going much further and you’ll end up as a GUE diver :p

Bite your tongue! Hell, no! We don’t get very dogmatic here. Everyone I know seems to do what works for them (within reason, no stupid crap). The coasts on the other hand, oy vey!

:poke:

[split fins] gonna kill ya? For sure...
The jury is out on that one, but one thing is certain: if you use split fins, you're gonna die.

Some time. Somehow.

But @Wookie , no one can learn from silence and private grumbling amongst the Scuba elite who’ve known each other years. When I am planning my family’s vacation, i need all the public shaming of bad practices to be right out there with its knickers off, or i might book the wrong boat! I can’t fly out to California or Red Sea to pre-inspect boats!
EVERYBODY needs to share honest, crisp assessments or what is the point of an online forum? I don’t mind saying...
HHHEEEELLLLPPP!!!
