absolutely agree 100% a piece of plastic wont save your life when it goes sideways.

I may very well have misunderstood her completely but it sounded like and my take on it was the guy in question was doing these dives regularly, had the required skill set and had a friend who would fill for him who then retired so now he's forced to go get the cert JUST for the cert.
