Builder smashes British record for catching heaviest blue shark after reeling in a 17 stone monster | Mail Online

While this angler supposedly released the shark alive post photo - the article is full of inflamatory comments such as 'pig of a fish' and 'killer shark'. Not sure what it will take to shift attitudes worldwide, however this is certainly a step in the wrong direction.

Not only will ocean acidification (climate change) affect us on land, it will also have far reaching effects within the oceans. Even sustainable fisheries will potentially be challenged. We are not just harming the environment, we are harming our own economic well being!

Can we meet the 10% protected area goal by 2020? Even with the 10-fold increase in the past decade, we are only at 2.3% of the oceans being protected. Far less than that is actually enforced!

From our friend Michael Bear:
"Bad news: Shelley Clarke, the researcher who did the initial groundbreaking study of the effects of shark finning on shark populations has a *new* study out which suggests that current shark finning bans 'as currently implemented,' are *not* effective in preventing the decline of certain species of shark, specifically, blue, mako, and oceanic whitetip sharks:"

It's not just finning - it's also longline fishing and more - What I don't understand is the increased demand for shark meat given the high levels of mercury.....
