I've had my Petrel 2 for a while and have used it wired in to the CCR and also open circuit diving. I've used it mostly for cave diving so it's definitely tough and I am very good at breaking stuff. The only problem I had with it was the aforementioned AA battery explosion while I was away for a month, and Shearwater fixed it. I've also used the Peregrine, which I borrowed while the Petrel was off for service, and that's a really nice little three gas computer. I didn't even look at it before I went diving, and I was able to set two gasses underwater in less than a minute, really simple menu like the Petrel.

Change of screws if rusty
New battery
Update firmware
Current consumption test
Depth accuracy test

HOLLY Fish $100 every two years for service??? The true cost of ownership for the SW computers isn't what people pay when they buy the computer only, there is an ongoing $100 every two years. WOW.

Can you recommend a computer that never needs a service, not even once?

Ratio says change the batteries every 8 - 10 years nothing else. I can't find anything about required periodic service. Scubapro same (the only computer that will need to be taken to a dealer for battery replacement is the A1/A2, don't buy it). If you can find anything in their literature about require periodic service, please let me know.

Any readers with the Luna2.0?
I just got back from my first trip with a Luna 2.0 (I was the first buyer at my LDS). I did 17 35-50 minute "resort" dives in Negril with it and would say it performed as I would expect it would, as it "just worked". I'm not a hard-core diver by any means, so was just using the basic features.

Some notes/observations:
  • The screen was very easy to read - both in daylight and on a night dive
  • They recommended to wear it on the same side as the transmitter (which I have on the right side) but I actually noticed 3-5 disconnects per dive when wearing the computer on my right wrist vs <1 per dive on my left (preferred) wrist - it would typically reconnect within seconds though
  • The safety stop timer doesn't start until you hit 15 feet, which was a change from my old computer, which started at 20 feet
  • The battery showed 3 out of 5 bars left after the 17 dives and syncing to the app a few times (which was easy as well)
Not sure if I can recommend it over any other computers, as I don't have the experience/expertise with many others, but I am happy with it so far. I also really like having the AI/wrist set up over my old connected unit (that I am keeping as a backup).

"Service your dive computer every 30 months or after 300 dives (whichever comes first) by RATIO® or a RATIO® Authorized Service Centre. This service will include a general operational check, replacement of the parts that require it, and water resistance check. The service requires special tools and training. Therefore, it is advisable to contact an authorized RATIO® dealer or distributor for periodical service."

I don't think anyone ever sends their sw in for service. I don't think is really needed. I like the my sw but repair situation is just very disappointing.
There is a thread about Teric and how many issues people had with those. I'm pretty sure that many of these guys would be pissed if they had to wait a month or two and/or pay a few hundred bucks every time.

I have a question. What is done in the service? Recalibratiom of the depth sensor?
I was sent a General Maintenance Service Brochure the last time Dive-Tronix returned my Teric after repairing the antenna. The cost is $150. Specific intervals for service for the computers are not mentioned. There is a statement that, "All dive gear should be maintained regularly. We recommend your Shearwater dive computer be serviced every 3-4 years." This seems to be somewhat at odds with the 2 year recommendation I got back from Shearwater customer service, post #44. A page on helpful tips for batteries is included in the brochure, both replaceable and rechargeable.

All computers get a full inspection. If in working order, general maintenance is performed, pressure and function testing is done, return shipping to a US destination is included. If a repair is needed, a note with findings and an estimate for the cost of repair will be provided.

Teric: battery, chassis O-ring, and bezel screws replaced. Any factory required update or modification. Firmware update if needed.

Petrels 1, 2, 3: Faceplate, if needed, battery cap, battery, and O-rings replaced. Battery contacts replaced if needed. Any factory required update or modification. Firmware update if needed.

Peregrine: Bezel and window O-ring replacement. Charging coil replacement if needed. Any factory required update or modification. Firmware update if needed.

Perdix, Perdix AI, and Perdix 2: Window, if needed, battery cap, battery, and O-rings replaced. Any factory required update or modification. Firmware update if needed.

Nerd 2: Battery and Chassis O-ring replacement. Any factory required update or modification. Firmware update if needed.

Predator: Faceplate, if needed, battery holder, and battery cap replacement. Firmware update if needed. Service subject to part availability, parts for Predator being discontinued.

Note, for the Teric, the battery is replaced during the general maintenance service. That is not true for the Peregrine. That may take care of some of the bad batteries, if they are still out there.

Thank you for bringing this out. I doubt that many people do this. I may do it if I happen to be in Europe maybe after 5 years but I have had my iX3M 1 since 2017 and never needed any service and it is working fine.
