expensive dive watch on a newbie

If it's a high end watch, The shop will think you have lots of $$ and expect you to buy all top of the line gear from them.

lol. ...well, there are times when you should park around the corner and ditch the jewelry.

oh...and it ain't posing if it's made from Titanium. Well, okay, I'll be a poseur if I ever can get that Ti bike. --but I'll try and cope.

Outside of the DIR folks, don't almost all recreational divers dive with computers? What do you need a dive watch for? It's okay if t's a bling thing. But if that's what it's for, then at least realize that it is just a watch and not really a dive watch.

i have a tt datejust with mother of pearl dial(which i do not dive with) and a seiko black monster that i do dive with. It is an awesome watch for the money (about 150 dollars) has an extension for use with a wetsuit. Am currently looking at purchaseing a planet ocean chronometer. If i had to buy one dive watch that had great lumination at depth it would be the black monster.

Grrrrrrr, I got both of my boys one of those. Got them trough a barter deal - sold them some add space - in lieu of payment I received some watches. To date those boys have yet to wear them. Maybe when they are older.

Mthelming, hopefully, given time, she will get used to the idea that getting it wet is okay.

I dunno about that. If you look at most online retailers, dive watches and dive computers are clearly different categories. There are a couple of dive computers that mimic watches (suunto D9) and I think I've seen a seiko dive watch that has all of the functions of a typical dive computer. Other than that, when people say dive watch, I tend to think of those St. Moritz watches sold by many scuba retailers or the I think about fancy watches (Rolex, Tag, Cartier, Omega, whatever) that are depth rated. Regardless, I still can't figure out what people do with a "dive watch". Heck, I can't even figure out how they get a dive watch to fit on top of a thick wet suit or a dry suit. Or are dive watches reserved for divers in warm water wearing 3mil shorties?

O, my apologies, mine are not dive watches, per say. Since I can't bear not wearing a watch and the ones I have can withstand depth, I use them for back-up timekeeping.

I use my Omega seamaster and a spg even though my wife bought me a computer.
I like having the redundancy available just in case.
After all I bought the seamaster for diving because of its durability and function.

As with all equipment use what makes you feel comfortable and confident not what everyone else thinks is the must have.

The right gear is what is right for you not someone else.

I am somewhat of a watch junkie as well but tend to go for older watches-my favorite being a Rolex Bubbleback bought in 1959 from a PX in Korea, box still has the price tag $85.00. But I wouldn't dive it. If I need redundant timekeeping I'll throw on the G-shock and call it a day. But I do strongly encourage everyone to dive their nice watches, I need a companion for the nice Seiko titanium chrono I found while diving last summer
