LOL! I saw those. I was thinking that a PVC end cap shoved into a regulator mouth piece with a small hole drilled in to would do the same thing. Work on your diving skills and bouyancy, that will do much more for you.

Hi guys,

I am a new diver and suck down air like there is no tomorrow. I am looking for ways to suck less air to increase bottom time. I saw an add on eBAy for a device called a ""EXPAND-A-LUNG" EXERCISER". The seller claims it will increase lung capacity and make you use air more efficiently. Any ideas?

Does anyone have othe techniques? Please email replies to ekiledjian@hotmail.com

Thank you
There is a breathing technique called “XALER”. If you practice this it will greatly improve your air consumption.

As far as the item on E-bay, can you spell Rip Off?

This device and others like it are not designed to lower breathing consumption for SCUBA divers. The point of the device is to aid freedivers in expanding lung capacity.

Start increasing your cardiovascular regimen e.g. swimming and running. This will help you as much as anything and it's free.

Additionly, most new divers experience the same thing that you are going through. As you dive more you will find that you air consumption will begin to improve.

Hope this helps.....

You could make that or a couple of dollars. It's a drip irrigation system for 3/4 inch pipe with a standard mouthpiece zip tied to it.

Now, would it help your SAC. I doubt it. Having stronger or bigger lungs isn't the answer.

Tips to improve underwater air use.

1) Do not go under until breathing is under control. Many people swim out to a location, or are nervous and breathing fast when they start to descend. You'll burn up tons of air doing this.

2) Do not over exert yourself. This will only increase your breathing rate and you'll waste air. There's rarely a need to kick fast or zoom around.

3) Move slowly and deliberatly. Ties into number 2. When you are slow and deliberate, you need to use very little air, and you are calm.

4) Stay streamlined and horizontal. Again, part of number 2. Less water resistence means less work, which means less air. Stuff hanging and dangling everywhere means less bottom time.

5) Breathly slowly and deeply. This doesn't mean suck as much air in your lungs as you can, that's dangerous, simply take slow deep breaths, as if you are trying to calm yourself down. This does keep you calm, which means less air use, and the breathing itself is efficient for air comsumption.

I don't have many dives yet, 19, but I already hit NDL limits long before my air is up. Most of my dives now end with me having over 1000 psi left. My first dives, I'd be at 2000 psi by the time I got to the depth I wanted, because of fast breathing.

Avoid fast breathing and your air use will automatically decrease.

Aerobic excercise will also help, by allowing you to do more excerise without increasing your breathing rate. That's still my biggest hurdle. If I have to work hard against a current, my breathing rate shots up too much.

There are several inspiratory/expiratory lung trainers on the market, sports breather and power lung are a couple others. I have used them and while they are effective a coffee straw will do the same thing essentially. Lowering your air consumption (and increasing breath hold for that matter) isn't really about capacity it is about being able to relax and breathe correctly (diaphragmatic). I would suggest going to Starbucks, having a cup of coffee and keeping the straw as a training tool. By the way, could i interest anyone in a freediving forum?

There are also a lot of devices advertised to make a man's "equipment" larger. There is no end to the rip offs people will promote for self improvement.

Start running. Don't stop until you feel like you're going to die. Repeat daily. When you get up to 6 miles or more, and in under 45 minutes, you'll find your air consumption is better. Is this more difficult than buying some device on eBay? Sure, and that's the point. There are no free lunches, no pain - no gain.

This device will make your equipment larger as well. Just insert equipment and smack with a big hammer. Equipment will get larger and change color too. Side effect, lots of cussing.
