Just curious.
Has anyone ever been diving and heard what I can only describe as a freight train? I know it was probably a freighter but just wondering if there are some other noise sources that you can actually feel the vibrations of while being deafening? We were moored off of Ft. Lauderdale so nobody was on the boat to tell us what it was.

Yes, but I was about 10 ft from a support for a railroad bridge. I was wondering how the QE2 got that far up a small river!

A large shark farted? Heck, I don't know.:D

Edited: I still say it was a ship. Very big. If you were off Ft. Lauderdale, you weren't that far from a very busy shipping lane. I have heard and felt cruise ships in Coz and and they were very loud. Other places too. Pretty common to hear this. Even in Bonaire.

Let me clarify. When I said a freighter, I meant it was a sea freighter, not a freight train. But it sounded like a freight train. And you could feel the pulse of the engines at about 80 fsw. Sorry if you misunderstood my statement.

Probably a train. Sound traveling down the tracks to the supports to the water. Otherwise it was one big boat. The ferry up in Puget Sound sounds like a train underwater. You can be 100's of yards away and it still sounds like it is right on top of you.

awap:

Let's see.......

- Your were diving near Ft Lauderdale
- 10 Feet away from the support from a RAILROAD bridge
- Your heard a sound that you thought was a TRAIN

I'd say you probably heard A TRAIN!

I beleive the Tri-Rail from Miami goes as far North as Ft Lauderdale. I also know there is a ton of railroad traffic comming and going from the shipping and frieght terminals in that area.

scubamike took it from me.

you know that saying; looks like poop, smells like poop, feels like poop, tastes... well you get the idea right?

A few minutes (by boat) south of Porteau Cove B.C. is a dive we like to call "Thunder Wall". It's a wall dive that starts about 30 feet below some train tracks carved into the rocks, and plunges down to a bottom at about 210 fsw.

Thunder Wall got its name because of what happens when a train goes by overhead. Your first indication that a train is coming is that your rib cage starts vibrating ... an effect that feels somewhat like when you're approached by one of those $1000 cars with the $3000 stereos that the kids are so fond of.

As the train gets closer, the feeling is more like a mild earthquake ... you want to back off the wall a bit to avoid small falling objects ... crabs and starfish and small rocks and such.

As the train passes overhead, the choice of name for the dive site becomes obvious. The noise is deafening, and I can actually feel the vibrations in my fillings.

Then the train proceeds, and the noise/vibration slowly ebbs ... disappearing after about 8 or 10 seconds.

It's a pretty cool experience ...
