I've never dived with the 72's, but one thing I discovered with doubles and trim in general, it's amazing what 50 dives on the rig will do to fix stuff - even without changing anything.

Rick and Lynne are both dead on, in my experience.

First, diving the rig often enough to relax in it is important. Any new rig takes getting used to.

Second, (though,) some tanks simply are not going to work for you no matter how many tweaks you do. (A set of free 72s however should fit nearly anyone - even tall guys....so I suspect its more an issue of #1 above.)

You say you're "top heavy", which I infer means that you keep doing head stands when you stop all movement and try to hover motionless.

This is very common among new doubles divers, and while you may still be dialing in the rig, the bottom line is that your body is a lever and your COG (center of gravity) is the fulcrum. While you can move your legs up and back or lengthened out for fine tuning trim, I think you'll do better by going with Perrone's advice and moving to (1) an aluminum BP with (2) some of the weight moved further down your "lever" - say a weightbelt with either two (2) lb weights or two (3) lb weights. That should balance you out properly.

Recognize that weight has much to do with proper trim, and also recognize that in determining proper weight those 72's need to be nearly empty. Establish your weight requirements with nearly empty tanks - no matter what size those tanks are.

Best,

Doc

I agree with that, I'm about 6 foot 3, and I got my 72's to trim very nicely after a couple dives. Just out of curiosity, are these your first set of doubles? I was lucky that I learned doubles in 108's that just worked spot on from the get go, so the transition wasn't too bad since I was used to doubles, it was just a matter of getting used to the 72's themselves.

Simply diving more seems to fix most of my trim problems, even without changing my weight or configuration.
