by eminent Italian Doctors (Lucarini, Longobardi, Faralli...) whose debate seems to suggest that "high pPO2" may mask out the symptoms of hypercapnia (hence asymptomatic unconsciousness and drowning) and may reduce the body CO2 transport mechanism (hence contributes to hypercapnic events).

Therefore, it may not be possible to rule out that even with a CO2 monitor in the inhale AND exhale side under some circumstances asymptomatic hypercapnic respiratory failure may occur with the consequent drowning.

Some suggest that a bottom pPO2 of 1.3 is not low enough, or is "too high," and this in conjunction with the above may explain some of the currently unexplained fatalities on rebreather, such as those of prominent divers like Wes Skiles.
