Hello:

I am not sure if this is the right forum but I was wondering whether an SSI dive control specialist can work for PADI resorts? How about Liveaboard operations that are not agency affiliated? Do they have a preference for a particular agency for hiring their DMs?

Thanks

Sinbad

What other qualifications or skills does the DCS have... I very much doubt if a reort or live aboard will offer employment to someone who cannot teach a pretty full scope of programs.

If the
resort has no tie with ssi you cannot teach for them. SSI instr can only work for a ssi facility..

SSI DCS is equiv to PADI DM/AI - so it is more a comparison of Divemaster duties, not the teaching of courses.

To hold PADI Dive Center/Resort status, the membership agreement between shops and PADI/IRRA requires that renewed PADI Divemasters (or above) must lead qualified divers on underwater tours.

Divemaster conducted programs must (obviously) be conducted also by renewed PADI Divemasters (and above). These would include; Scuba Review, Discover Local Diving, Snorkeler courses and (if DSD internship is completed by the DM) the limited Discover Scuba Diving experience. An SSI DCS would not be qualified to conduct any of those for the dive center.

There's no reason why an SSI DCS couldn't be hired for non-diving duties - shop work, maintenance etc etc.

absolutely true..I missed the part where op stated he/she was a dive con...

so the dive con probably cannot get liability insurance for working out of PADI facility.

which would limit what a dive con can do at a PADI facility thereby making him/her less valuable to that operation.

True..but again why hire someone that can only be used in a limited basis when a facility can hire someone that can work anywhere in the facilities operation?
When it comes down to finding a job in this industry a PADI pro rating is usually the easiest way to find a position. A DM rating is very limiting as a facility can just as easily hire an instructor that can be placed in more job areas than a Dm. Want a job in the industry? Start as an instructor.Get experience with marine mechanics such as outboard motor maintain/repair, diesel engines, compressors, gear repair, boat operations,if in US waters a USCG capt license.

Absolutely. I left it to the OP to gauge their chances of securing employment under such restrictions.

It's been my experience - at least on Caribbean liveaboards - that most of the crew are Instructors and function as divemasters as needed. Most can teach a variety of courses at different levels as needed also. I think that's true in some in-demand shore locations also - like Grand Cayman where the shop has to sponsor you to get a work permit.

did anyone hear back from the op?

:d :d :d
