Dr Bill, as Claudette has stated it appears as though these are the same "thingies". :) It looks as though the one(s) you posted were empty (already hatched) and the ones we came accrossed had yet to hatch.

Phil, Navanax inermis egg masses are quite different in appearance... they look like little baskets woven out of cream-colored threads. In addition, the gelatinous thingies that I've seen are far too large to have been made by a Navanax unless it was on serious steroids!

I don't remember if I have any images of them on my website. Just checked and I don't.

Found an image in my high def stills on my video editing computer:

Isn't the Navanax inermis egg mass more weblike (I think like seen here - sorry not the best shot):

So the ones from the pics posted by Humongous, I thought they looked more like old Squid egg sacks - but I guess they are not as the experts here have not even mentioned that. They definately seem different though, from the ones posted by Dr. Bill - and those I have seen many times off Catalina (which I've always just thought were some strange gelatinous sponge...)

Probably not related - but thought this was interesting - UnderwaterTimes | Scientists Stumped: Underwater Photographer Captures Picture of Mysterious Gelatinous Ball; 'A Bit of Science Fiction'
