Any doctor out there can you tell me the effect of "Mometasone Furoate Monohydrate" 140DOS Nasonex Aqueous???? If I have to use this medication for 4-8 weeks what are the effect or side effect related to diving?

Thanks

Hi Sylvian,

Mometasone furoate is a steroid and the active ingredient in the brand name nasal spray Nasonex. It is prescribed for the treatment of seasonal and year-round allergies affecting the upper respiratory tract.

It works by stopping cells in the nasal lining from producing inflammation-causing chemicals that are normally released when the body reacts to allergens or irritation. By preventing these inflammatory agents from being released, related signs and symptoms are prevented or lessened.

Used as directed, it generally has a benign side effect profile, although headache, nosebleeds, and irritation/burning of the nasal lining and throat may occur.

In the absence of any problematic adverse reactions, there is nothing about the action of this type of medication that should increase the risks of scuba.

Arguably of more concern is that the signs and symptoms for which the drug is prescribed are under adequate control. Diving while nasal inflammation or congestion interfere with easy and effective equalization and breathing obviously is not a good idea.

Use the medication only as directed and give it an adequate topside trial prior to diving to assess for worrisome side effects. Inform the doctor if any do develop.

Between my wife and I we use Nasonex and FloNase which I believe is similar in nature.

They need some time to work so do not just use them on dive day, start the medication a few days in advance if you are not remaining on them 100% The insert states that prolonged use can cause irritations so I back of when able.

I'm not a doctor, just a pharmecitcally enabled diver.

Hi Pete,

What is " pharmecitcally?"

Yes, Nasonex (mometasone furoate) and Flonase (fluticasone propionate) are quite similar in nature. They both are corticosteroid-based nasal sprays prescribed for allergic rhinitis and similar conditions.

The reason I was asking is some medication can have other effect when used during diving and that is what I was checking to see. At this time I am not diving as I am waitign for a CT SCAN in June I am experiencing pressure on the left eye and looks like my left ear is always plug so for now until I get the Scan and see a specialist NO DIVING for me they think it could be something in my eustachian tube or my sinuses. I just have to wait and see...

Fish Whisperer NO I have none of the effect that you are talking about now for the last 2 weeks or so it look like it was gone no pressure on the ear or the eye but 2 days ago it started again and I was at my Doctor yesterday (temporary until our new doctor takes office again) and I mention to him what was going on I tried Sinutab sudafed and nothing work so he prescribe me that medication now today totally different story I used the spray and, my ear started about 30 min ago to feel like it was even more block and a constant buzz with a little discomfort so I will stop using the spray and take the bottle with me to go the emergency as this look like a side effect and I don't really like that feeling
