Hi Sylvian,
Mometasone furoate is a steroid and the active ingredient in the brand name nasal spray Nasonex. It is prescribed for the treatment of seasonal and year-round allergies affecting the upper respiratory tract.
It works by stopping cells in the nasal lining from producing inflammation-causing chemicals that are normally released when the body reacts to allergens or irritation. By preventing these inflammatory agents from being released, related signs and symptoms are prevented or lessened.
Used as directed, it generally has a benign side effect profile, although headache, nosebleeds, and irritation/burning of the nasal lining and throat may occur.
In the absence of any problematic adverse reactions, there is nothing about the action of this type of medication that should increase the risks of scuba.
Arguably of more concern is that the signs and symptoms for which the drug is prescribed are under adequate control. Diving while nasal inflammation or congestion interfere with easy and effective equalization and breathing obviously is not a good idea.
Use the medication only as directed and give it an adequate topside trial prior to diving to assess for worrisome side effects. Inform the doctor if any do develop.
