I don't know what kind of algae it is but it is all over the place. The most common fish I find in it when drift diving are large Cowfish and large Pufferfish.

I do notice that where there are large patch reefs, there is a sandy perimiter area around them. That is also true of the areas where the two WWII wrecks are. I believe some of the fish species on the wrecks as well as the patch reefs eat that algae, leaving the sandy areas.
 
thats what happens when you chase stuff to photograph.

my buddy and me had a similar thing with a titan trigger fish in the red sea (these things are huge) he chased us and was bitting at my fins (have heard stories of divers getting serious bites and masks removed by these guys), he stopped and we swam off as quick as we could.

5 mins later he swam right by my face, the bugger had follwed us and was trying it on again, i swam in the other direction and spent the rest of the dive looking over my shoulder!
