The black ring will get scratched with use. I am hard on my gear, and all of mine are scratched.
But if you get into scuba because you want to look good...I don't mind scratches on my gear, I feel it shows that I actually use it fairly often.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not all about looks; but, I guess if I had the choice between chrome (which doesn't show scratches easily), and black (that gets scratched), I'd choose chrome. That's not to say I wouldn't choose a HOG reg for that reason, but in an "all other things being equal" situation, I wouldn't choose the scratchable one.
I thought that perhaps it was some kind of black chrome (is there such a thing?) that would be relatively impervious to scratches. So I didn't want to assume.
