If it comes from the same factory, is it really fair to call it a "cheap copy"? I trust my hog regs on demanding cave dives. They perform better than any other reg I have. Realize that the person you spoke with is a sales rep, and take what he says with a grain of salt.

In my chat with a rep from Dolphin they had this to say:

"The HOG brand is an after market line. Small company ordering from China. It is designed to be cheap and sold cheap. They are cheap copies of name brand equipment"

Ouch ...

Given the *many* good reviews of HOG gear and the many well respected retailers that recommend and sell HOG gear, I can't help but wonder why the Dolphin rep would say such a thing ....?

Henrik

Their price is FAR better. If I needed another reg, I would be picking up a set from them right now! $350 gets the cold water 1st stage and 2 second stages!

Richard

Where do you see this $350? I only see separate 1st and seconds and they are $40 to $50 more than what Dive Right in Scuba charges.

Anyway, cheap in this case only means it costs less. Looks like great regulators from everything I've seen - copying an existing, proven design is a good idea.

The Edge Epic reg. has my attention. I am looking for a good quality reg. for use in tropical waters. From what I read this one looks quite good, and the price can't be beat. I am not ruling out well established ones (like Apeks, for example). Opinions? Thanks.

I haven't tried one, but as price seems to be the most important factor for you and this regulator meets your budget. Go for it!

You should have been on here before Christmas. I picked up two HOG coldwater set ups( minus hoses) from Dive Right In Scuba for $308 total. That's right, they were on sale for 154 each!

I would like an excellent reg. That doesn't give me much confidence, though.

Dolphin used to be our west coast wholesale distributor, they didn't seem to feel that way then.

Rest assured they are not by any means cheap anything.

Virtually the same thing could be said to "kill" a sale on just about any regulator out there with the exception of Atomic and Oceanic. It's the same factory in China that makes makes most of them, and one is not a "cheap copy" of another.

Amazing what the desire to sell something else will pry out of the salesperson's mouth. Could be an inventory issue, could be a spiff on something else, who knows?

Hm ... might I put stress on the phrase "used to be," pretty please?

I don't mean to belabor the issue, however: The price is only one (albeit an attractive) factor. I don't mind spending more money to make the right decision-- especially on one as important as a regulator.

So, how can I compare the HOG regulator with one such as the Atomic Aquatics Z2x, leaving price out of the equation?

Chris @ EDGE and HOG specs his regs from the same factory as many others. He is providing a very high quality product at a very competitive price. Sometimes you pay for a brand name, sometimes you pay for the product.

In college I worked summers at a warehouse for a large East Coast grocery store chain-Weis Markets. I was Unloading train cars on the night shift. The cars would come into the siding. Half the car would be Heinz Ketchup the other side of the car would be the markets private label. Same factory, same stuff, same dates on the master packs-30% + difference in the retail price. The same was true for paper products, cereal, etc.

If you want the Mercedes logo that is OK-I'll take my '94 Honda with 210K and only routine service.

well let me be blunt

the Z2X Rocks and is an excellent regulator!

So is the HOG, you would very hard pressed to notice a difference however between the two in use, esp. as a fairly new diver.

The Atomic first stage is a balanced piston design, my D1 a balanced diaphram. Both have excellent flow, my HOG D1 has exhibited slightly better IP consistency in some depth/flow rate combinations , the Z2X has slightly better flow overall. If you are looking at a air dive past 400 feet or so I would recommend the Atomic, using Tri Mix you'll be just fine with either well beyond 400.....

The second stage are similar, the Atomic has a auto adjust venturi, the HOG you have the control, nice on the surface when not in your mouth or diving in a current or flow. The Z2X has Atomic patented seat saver which is pretty cool, I do choose a harder HP seat than some other so it will last longer however

You can't and won't go wrong with either one.
