Virtually the same thing could be said to "kill" a sale on just about any regulator out there with the exception of Atomic and Oceanic. It's the same factory in China that makes makes most of them, and one is not a "cheap copy" of another.
Amazing what the desire to sell something else will pry out of the salesperson's mouth. Could be an inventory issue, could be a spiff on something else, who knows?

according to the owner at Dolphin Scuba it was exactly as Thal guessed in his above post. He is apologetic and wants me and his customers to understand that those sales tactics are NOT how Dolphin Scuba is supposed to operate.

Glad that got sorted out, I've always liked the folks at Dolphin and that seemed a bit out of character, but I'm seeing more and more of that sort of thing (in lots of areas, not just diving) I guess due to the pressures of the current economy.

Anyway ... bottom line for me would be the fact that I greatly prefer diaphragm regs.

Yeah, Mike (the owner) is a great guy and really did feel bad about this.

Wow that was a sweet link so I got HOG d1 second stage for $95 shipped not as good as you guys with the Black Friday deal of 1st and 2nd. Now all I need is some guages and a back up 2nd stage.

The link lead me to Dive Right somehow I got one ordered for $95 but now they don't show them so guess I got the last one.

Where do you see this $350? I only see separate 1st and seconds and they are $40 to $50 more than what Dive Right in Scuba charges.

Anyway, cheap in this case only means it costs less. Looks like great regulators from everything I've seen - copying an existing, proven design is a good idea.

I was talking about the Dive Right In prices being far lower than Dolphin's. A top notch regulator (even sans hoses) for $350 including the octo seems like a bargain.

Man when the 2nd stage is only 95 bucks it's hard to buy an alternate 2nd stage for 50-100 when I could just buy one more of these for 95 bucks.

I have LOTS of seconds in stock right now and first stages will be in stock as soon as Hog has them available again....hopefully in a week or so. The new Firsts will also come with the bottom port for routing :D Not sure exactly what it will do to the price, but you guys will know as soon as we do

SWEEEEEEEEEEEET Regs!! Don't be intimidated by the low price, it is high quality. Check all the reviews we have on them at the bottom of the products page. These are from REAL customers....alot on this board.

Hi Mike,

I'm fairly new to diving, so please humor me if this is an obvious question :)

I'm looking at the HOG reg set, and when I see the black color of the second stage, my first thought is that it looks nice, but... will it scratch and scrape and then just look really untidy after some use? I guess I've seen too many black anodized spars and the like get all scratched and show through silver. (That's not to say the regs are anodized, but just to explain why the thought came to mind.)

It's not that I'm so into looks, but if it were going to scratch, then I'd just rather have chrome plating to begin with, and forego the black.

Also.... any chance you are going to have another special like the Black Friday one? I wasn't aware of your regs at that point in time. Woe is me!

Thank you :)
B.

PS: I really like the fact that parts and service training are available to HOG reg owners. That's great.

Edited to add:

I found this description:

HOG Second stages have been produced using a DIVE INDUSTRY first and MUCH more environmentally friendly Trivalent Chroming process. Trivalent Chrome is exceptionally friendly to the environment compared to standard Chrome; it is also much more expensive.

That said, I'm not actually sure which parts of the outside of the regulator are made of metal, and which (if any) are made of black plastic.

I could be wrong but the HOG 2nd stage face plate "ring" looks to be identical to DiveRites RG2500 and RG3000 which can be purchased for around $8. If you were so inclined you could try to buff the black ring into silver/chrome not sure what this would look like but if its the same as the DR then for $8 Id give it a go. Good luck Cheers.

The black ring will get scratched with use. I am hard on my gear, and all of mine are scratched.

But if you get into scuba because you want to look good... :D I don't mind scratches on my gear, I feel it shows that I actually use it fairly often.
