The Edge Epic reg. has my attention. I am looking for a good quality reg. for use in tropical waters. From what I read this one looks quite good, and the price can't be beat. I am not ruling out well established ones (like Apeks, for example). Opinions? Thanks.

I bought that reg set for my grandson. He seems happy with it but, hey, he's a kid. What does he know? I had a cold water kit installed when I bought it.

Tropical diving to recreational depths doesn't put much of a demand on a regulator and, heck, I'm using 20 year old Oceanic Omega II's in cold water. I bought them when I was diving in warm water and just can't stand to part with them. It's pretty clear that I'm not a discerning diver.

So, yes, I would dive the Edge Epic. Is it the equal of the high end regs? Probably not. But search this forum for a discussion we just had about the HOG regulator. It's also inexpensive (HOG and Edge are the same outfit) but is HIGHLY regarded. It comes in parts (1st stage separate from 2d stage) and is readily available over the Internet. Parts and training are available to anyone.

Dolphin Scuba has both the Edge Epic and HOG regs available. I don't know how their price compares with what you are looking at.

I got you beat by a year... have been diving with my omega for 21 years now and now moving on to a new reg. My omega just doesn't breathe as nice as it used to even with "tweaking" it.

After a lot of research and chatting with other divers as well as going on forums I think I have narrowed it down to atomics, apeks or edge.

BTW... you can get the epic with an octo at 2 different online stores for around $350 or so.

Actually, I bought my Omega II's in Jan 1988 so they are about 22 years old. I just rounded off.

As to the Edge regulator, Dolphin Scuba has a somewhat better price. Not a lot but something...

What Dolphin also has is the HOG regulator. They have both the standard and cold versions of the 1st stage as well as the 2d stage. Considering how highly it is regarded, the price is outstanding!

A first stage and two 2d stages for < $500. Not as cheap as the Edge at $300 but it should compare well with the Atomics and Apeks. You need to add something for the hoses that are not included.

Thanks, everyone for your ideas and suggestions. Now I'm leaning toward the HOG rather than the Edge... It's not that much more expensive, and is geared to the serious diver. Maybe I'll become one of those someday! All kidding aside, I feel the most comfortable using equipment which goes beyond my normal limits (in depth and temperatures).

Here's a dumb question from a pretty new diver: How do you decide on which hose length to order?

If you want to go with what you have been taught, the default hose lengths will work for the most part. You may want to see if you can get a longer (40") hose on the octo for comfort, but a few inches here and there don't matter too much.

However, the standard way of doing things is inferior to the long-hose setup. For open water, you'd have your primary regulator on a 5ft hose, routed under your right arm, across your chest, then around your neck. In emergency you donate this. Meanwhile your backup reg is on a bungee necklace around your neck on a short hose. See:

Again the standard lengths will work, just get a 5' hose for the primary. If you want to read about it there are tons of posts on the board, search for "hogarthian long hose necklace" etc.

Here's one:

Might as well throw this in here too:

FYI - One big difference between HOG and Edge that potential rec divers need to be aware of is that HOG only come in DIN so you would also need to get a din to yoke adapter. For most people that do not own their own tanks, it is rare to find a din tank when traveling.

Dive Right in Scuba has much better pricing on the HOG regs.

Their price is FAR better. If I needed another reg, I would be picking up a set from them right now! $350 gets the cold water 1st stage and 2 second stages!

It's nice that the parts kits are on the same page - I searched their site for 'HOG' to get everything in one place.

In my chat with a rep from Dolphin they had this to say:

"The HOG brand is an after market line. Small company ordering from China. It is designed to be cheap and sold cheap. They are cheap copies of name brand equipment"

I would like an excellent reg. That doesn't give me much confidence, though.
