Our most recent trip to the Galapagos was last July. One thing you might want to consider is adding jungle time on to the end of your trip. We have been with several people who picked up bugs in "la selva" on pre-dive outings and were very green on dives.
Yes. We scheduled the jungle lodge during the last week of our trip.
Thank you all for your input.
I tend to agree with Chris on the "danger issue" although Albert's story is very relevant. I will not bring any valuable to the jungle lodge and keep in mind that armed robbery is a possible threat.
We dealt mostly with local businesses. They were nice and professionnal and booking was a breeze. Although I had the most excellent customer service, the dive cruise itinerary/schedule has yet to be approved by the local authorities. It's a major annoyance, but I don't think the tourism industry is at fault here.
I agree with Albert, Dan and Papa Bear. The government mismanages the Galapagos, allows "accidental" shark finning and sure as hell doesn't seem to care about the environment. As far as I know, the jungle lodges (and some dive operators) are fine examples of ecotourism.
I may be wrong, but I don't think a boycott will hurt the corrupt Ecuadorian government much. I choose to support eco-friendly businesses. My reasoning is that the more successful they become, the more weight they have in the political balance.
I don't support my own government's environmental policies yet I recommend you all come dive in Canada
