... celebratory dive trip in September/October ... decently priced, perfect for a beginner diver. I'm thinking the Florida Keys

Good thought about watching the weather. If you go mid-October you should be in great shape. Echo the Key Largo suggestion - great, shallow, warm reef diving out of Largo, perfect for new divers. Get a direct Boston to Miami flight, with a reasonably short drive to Largo from Miami. Many good operators in Largo. You might wish to check some websites, and contact them in advance to get a subjective 'feel' for them. I might suggest Ocean Divers myself, but you won't go wrong with most of them.

lol.... toolbox (aka the polar bear)dives a shorty from late May until October then 3mil until mid November then he dives his 7mil ... I dive the 7 mil until late June and get it out again in September. I hate a dry suit been there done that and found it to be lacking but that is a personal preference....

If I was taking my first dive trip after being certified, I'd do the keys lots to see, warm water pretty fishes and it's still in the states... a good thing for a 19 year old...

You might find the price of a flight from Boston (or Manchester/Providence) to Fort Lauderdale is significantly cheaper than a flight to Miami. It may not be, but since the drive to the Keys isn't much farther, it's worth a look.

I'd also recommend the upper keys, maybe molasses reef, hens & chickens, or some of the other shallow reefs would be good as a beginner.

Personally, I find the local diving to be much more interesting than the local snorkeling, so don't give up on it just yet! With a good wetsuit, you should be quite comfortable in the water for at least 6 months of the year.

I agree with the others who have encouraged you to dive in your own backyard.

You'll find that if you spend the spring/summer diving in New England...the rewards of experience will pay off in Florida. Also, you won't notice how free and agile you feel in warmer waters unless you persevere in the colder temps.

I'm in the Pacific NW where our waters are chilly...but truly, I find so much amazement under the sea, that the gear considerations are worth it to be able to dive in my backyard.

Keep us posted if you get into the New England diving...

The Keys and are a great place to dive. People are going to tell you to go here are there. The thing is the Keys have a lot of different thins to do, from beginners to advanced divers. Theres great reefs, old wrecks, put down wrecks, sallow and deeper dives they have it all.

After you dive here and have alot of experience here then its cool to plan trips that require your passport. I've been alot of places but still love to deep in the Keys.

Get on a boat that does more catering to divers than a cattle boat. In Key Largo check out Silent World they run 2 smaller boats with up to I believe 14 divers.

Some places to check out the elbow / north-north / city of washington / benwood / molasses / christ of the deep / dry rocks / french / pickles / chicken and then new wrecks if your advanced enough in that time the spiegel, duane and bibb.
