New to the Patrol area. I live in Ashland and am looking for places to go dive. I am looking for day trips for the most part and am not Altitude cert. Any places in the East KY Western WV and south east OH area?

Don't know how far you are but how about FRP , PennyRoyal. There is one more that I can't think of the name and don't have a link. It is a dam created lake. Someone will come along and give you info on that one.

In Southeastern Ky there is Laurel Lake Dam. It is in Corbin. The spillway there has a man made beach that buts up against the dam. Sometimes the visibility is pretty good and then sometimes not so much. There are a few things there to see.

I have been told that Cerulean Quarry is a good dive. Im not sure if they are still open. Any one got any info on them.

Laurel was the one that I was thinking of. From what I have been told you want to catch it when the dam is open, draining. If the water is coming up then all the sediment is washing back into the lake.

Cerulean is closed.

Welcome to the area. Kinda ironic, I was in Colorado and wanted to take an altitude class (5,000'-14,000' elevations) but none of the dive shops taught it, although I know a few shops may still teach altitude diving at Mt. Storm Lake if you're interested in getting the certification.

Usually I search for local dive shops and check to see where they go diving but this link also has a great list of dive sites across the US (although missing many, and some of the info is outdated, still a good place to start)

I have been lucky enough to meet a few of the people in this thread at FRP (a.k.a. Falling Rock Park/Falling Rock Quarry/Joe's Quarry) -- nice dives and friendly people there.

Cave Run Lake is closer than Laurel. Traveling to Laurel from Ashland you might as well go to Falling Rock Park. Travel distance would be about the same. Although there isn't as much to see in Cave Run, there are a few foundations there that can be dove, and from what the map says that I have, a few houses are still there. My guess would be they've fallen apart by now. I could prolly check a little more on it, one of the employees at my LDS lives in that area.

That would be great. I can't get over there not being any other places. with the old strip mines and quar. pits etc.

Has anyone been in yatesville or Grayson lake? I have heard that the vis is not good but I am just curious.

I have never done any diving there but from my old fishing/sking days, Paintsville Lake used to have great vis and enough coves to get out of the main traffic lanes. I seem to remember some days where you could see the bottom in 10-15 ft of water. I don't remember if the marina rented boats or not but since its sorta in your area, it might be worth a look.

I don't know anything about Yatesville, but Grayson Lake has very poor visibility.
