Just when I think I understand, then I see that I didn't. :silly: In addition to Lynn's informative article explaining the differences between middle ear infection and barotrauma, I found help understanding in this DAN article which even lists some other possibilities - and the important first paragraph: "No article can give you the same degree of information as an experienced medical practitioner. DAN suggests all persons with any ear discomfort should be examined by a trained medical practitioner as soon as possible after the complaint develops."
