I avoid putting alcohol into my ears because the drying effects are worse than the itching if I don't use anything, I use distilled (regular) vinegar diluted by about one third. I used to use a mix of vinegar, alcohol and 5% glycerine, but found it didn't do a better job than diluted vinegar.
Either way I use it every few days on long dive trips, or when either ear shows any irritation.
