If you ever get a chance to dive the east side, DO IT. We had no idea what to expect and the reef over there has very interesting topography and, it was full of fans and soft finger coral all swaying in the surge. Not many fish smaller fish on the deeper site but there were some huge grouper and snapper. The shallower site was also very nice. A finger and groove reef with lots of nooks and ledges to check out. It had an pretty nice variety of smaller fish and also the big groupers.
Do you have to use a particular dive shop to dive on the east side?

Dove in Coz last week with Aldora Divers and saw several eagle rays particularly on San Francisco reef.

Guess we just weren't in the right place at the right time.

Martha, I don't know if there is an operator that does east side sites on a regular basis. We just lucked out that conditions were perfect (which is apparently not often the case) and our dive master asked when we got on the boat if we wanted to go. We dive with Living Underwater.

When you say East side, which sites are you specifically referring to?

Your description sounds like Maracaibo and Maracaibo Shallows or Chun Chacaab.

We were in the area of El Islote and our second dive was a bit more toward the point. I don't know that it actually had a name, but it's somewhere between Maracaibo Shallows and Islote, still on the eastern side of the point. Both dives were great. We did our first SI on the boat, then came around the point after the second dive and went to Palancar beach and did our third dive at Palancar Gardens. It was a great day of diving that I hope we get a chance to repeat on a future trip.
