I'm just going by what our DM Pedro (Blue XTSea) told us, he said they were bull sharks.. I believe him, I looked at some cobia pics on the web and trust me these were not cobia they were sharks. The ray wasn't near the bottom so it wasn't kicking anything up.
Matt, too bad I had to cancel last Memorial day, I was looking forward to diving with you...

Trust me, they were Cobia, not bull sharks!!!!!!!! Read my earlier post on this subject.

Matt

Actually, they DID see Bull Sharks one day in the same line of view as an Eagle Ray. From Pedro's report, they weren't swimming alongside the Eagle ray...they were just kind of circling around...but they were definitley bull sharks. There have been a few sightings of them in recent months.

Great,

You know how I love sharks and Eagle Rays!

I'll be down for 10 days in April and will be diving 23 dives with you.
(Hopefully we can get 3 dives per day in and 2 on our last day)

Let's go find some Bull Sharks and Eagle Rays!

Christy,

Other than the Northern Sites known for their Eagle Rays at some times of the year, are there some sites that have a better chance of seeing them that don't fall into the San Juan/ Barracuda area? Or is it just best to do lots of dives as they are everywhere from time to time? It might be better to try and think of where they rarely are seen and dive elsewhere.

I've got to get a good picture of one this year!

Last year we saw Eagle Rays at Barracuda, Dalila, and Paso de Cedral/Cedral Wall.

Christi thanks for chiming in, kind of hard to get people to believe we saw bulls without photographic proof..
Peggy and I are probably going to down there around Sept. (hopefully earlier) and will be looking to diving with you again:D We'll let you know as soon as we figure out the dates.

Here's the one we saw yesterday at Palancar Gardens...I posted it wrong yesterday and now can't edit...

I was so excited I forgot to turn the flash off...so please excuse the backscatter :)

Matt, they are really anywhere from the norht to the south...including Paradise.

Joe, I'm looking forward to seeing you guys again :)

Are there squadrons of Eagle Rays to be found in mid July? I seem to recallalways seeing individual Rays on all my summer trips, but not multiples at one time.

We got back late last night. The only bad thing about the trip was that it wasn't long enough, but are they ever?

9 dives and only one Eagle Ray, and that one just teased us since he showed up as we were on the surface taking our BC's off and getting back on the boat. WAAAAHHHHH!!! But, I can't really complain because we did see some fish that we had never seen before - a bat fish and a pair of lizard fish. And, our last day we decided to dive 3 tanks. We went over to the east side for the first two tanks and ended the day at Palancar Gardens, which was just beautiful and the only Palancar site that I hadn't dived before.

If you ever get a chance to dive the east side, DO IT. We had no idea what to expect and the reef over there has very interesting topography and, it was full of fans and soft finger coral all swaying in the surge. Not many fish smaller fish on the deeper site but there were some huge grouper and snapper. The shallower site was also very nice. A finger and groove reef with lots of nooks and ledges to check out. It had an pretty nice variety of smaller fish and also the big groupers.
