I'd say "drinking the koolaid" is not an uncommon American idiom. You certainly don't hear it every day, but it's applied to a number of "follow the leader" or "true believer" situations.

It gets used in the workplace a lot (or at least my workpaces), along with "crack smoking". Often both of those terms get used multiple times in any discussion of the actions of management...
