I just watched Sport Diver on the OLN. They are featuring wreck dives in the Great Lakes. Many of the divers are using drysuits presumably because its cold but I noticed that only one diver had gloves. The other divers were barehanded. Wouldn't gloves be needed for thermal protection?

If it is cold, yes.

I have dove in warm water with a dry suit just to stay dry, however. Point is, you can dive dry year round, just go without gloves and hood when warm (or light weight ones if you want).
