Hi all

I am planning to complete my speciality courses in Tioman in September. I have been to Tioman before and did not enjoy the bus trip, the waiting time and certainly not carrying the heavy equipment through the custom. So I plan to solo drive from Singapore to Mersing. I want to know if anyone has done this before . Is the route straight forward? What are the options for carparks like?

Appreciate your comments very much.

Hi,
I've made the drive from KL several times, but not from Singapore. You should be able to find some useful info and maps on the Internet if you search it.

The car park (dirt lot on the left when you're facing the marina gate) has always been safe and reliable for me, so I wouldn't expect any problems with that. However, you may still have to deal with ferry delays due to tides or holidays :-).

I've heard there is another ferry running now from a place which is not so affected by the tides, but I don't have any details on it. Maybe someone else can enlighten us with some info on that.

It is very easy to drive to Mersing from Singapore. I have done it many times but not recently. Speeding will guarantee that you get a ticket or a request for a bribe. Be forewarned. Park in the secure lot but I'd worry a little bit with Singapore plates if you had a brand new fancy car. Clunkers, no worries. Tides at: Malaysian Meteorological Department

Google will set you free.

@Zippsy - hahaha.. yes, google will set you free

Door to door transport is readily available from Singapore to Mersing jetty ferry terminal and Tanjung Leman ferry terminal in Malaysia where you can board the ferry to the magical islands of diving and snorkelling!

Don't take a coach unless you are REALLY BUDGET. It's super troublesome as the bus lanes are perpetually jammed up and the delay caused by having to alight all passengers and luggages at the Singapore/Malaysia immigration customs will cause you to miss your ferry at the jetty.

Pulau Tioman, Pulau Sibu, Pulau Aur, Pulau Dayang etc
The list goes on and on..

if you can afford a car in singapore then you can surely afford to fly berjaya air from sing to tioman, about rm200 each way. not much more expensive than gas, tolls, parking etc.. anyway. just have to wait 18 hours after your last dive to fly back. if you do drive, park in the dirt lot at the jetty rm12 per day, its safe, done it many times.

I am driving to Mersing 14 March to catch 6 pm ferry. Will leave Singapore perhaps around 1 pm from the city.

Anyone interested in tagging along, let me know.

Traveldelight, please do tell us more about the door to door service please.

I just did this. We had six passengers. We arranged for the resort to provide transport from home in Singapore. On the way there it was a van, but on the side it was labelled as a "tourist bus" (in Malay). As such we had to alight at immigration and carry all the bags, etc., as if we had been on a coach. On the way back we expressly asked for a private car and didn't have to alight. The driver needed turn by turn directions to get us home. We paid SGD 250 each way.

There are no commercial flights from Singapore to Tioman now. Air Berjaya cancelled theirs. Some of the resorts are considering setting up a regular charter. The owner of our resort told us all about it. They are also looking into alternative ferry options...

Speaking of which, the ferry from Mersing was scheduled at 11:30 and didn't depart until after 1pm. Departure terminal is a zoo. Nothing to do about it- I just want to set expectations. Ferry itself is nice enough, if crowded. A helpful hint on the return... Board at Tekek if you can. It's the first port, and apparently the ferry fills up before hitting the final stop on the island (Genting). Yesterday (so Monday afternoon) everyone in Genting was able to board, but the boat was packed. There didn't seem to be any system of tracking capacity, so I could totally see buying a ticket at Genting and getting stuck there.

BTW, Tioman was awesome.
