It should not be at all difficult to round and polish the edges of the slots.
High grade stainless steel is very hard and a tough material to work with, even more with household tools.

Hi,
All the edges of the Dive Rite plates are smoothed and rounded to avoid chafing. I don't use the sleeve myself and have a couple hundred dives on my harness - still going strong.
Let me pass along the feedback, however. It seems there is a consensus that other plates are less prone to harness wear.
