I have a new S/S DR Backplate that I am getting ready to install a new Transplate Harness on. This is my first venture in to a BP/W.

While at the Tacoma, WA Dive and Travel Show this weekend, I was looking at a competitor's plate. The rep showed me how their plate had "fluted" or beveled edges on all the webbing slots whereas DR's does not. He is correct about that. Rep then stated that DR's plate WILL eventually cut into the webbing and maybe the wetsuit too.

Is this just the competition slamming DR or perhaps a bit of fact? Before I get the new plate and harness wet, I would sure like to know while I still have return or resale options.

I use DR SS plate and transplate harness. I think all DR harness, basic, transplate,... they have all those "anti chaffing sleeve" on their harness, so plate would would need to first cut through those before eating into the actual harness. And I think plate cutting into wetsuit probably won't ever happen.

I can confirm that my DR AL BP wears through webbing and my Halcyon SS BP does not seem to.....

Good news is that webbing is cheap, I replace the webbing every other dive season.....

Looking at the edge of the slots, although not sharp to the touch, I can see where it could happen!

40 or so dives on transplate and ss plate from dive rite...no issues with cutting or tearing webbing at all so far.

Hi,

All the edges of the Dive Rite plates are smoothed and rounded to avoid chafing. I don't use the sleeve myself and have a couple hundred dives on my harness - still going strong.

Let me pass along the feedback, however. It seems there is a consensus that other plates are less prone to harness wear.

Best,
Kathleen
