I became fascinated in diving Devil's Inkwell because I've only spoken to one person that has dove there. I jumped through the hoops to get a special permit, grabbed two buddies and headed over there.
We were met by swarms of mosquitoes and about a 25 ft cliff to descend to the water's edge. We slowly lugged our tanks and gear down the cliff. After gearing up, we hit the water which a welcoming relief from the mosquitoes.

I immediately knew as I began to drop down that I needed a bigger and brighter flashlight. We hit bottom at exactly 21 ft and the lake lived up to it's name....it was black and very dark even at 21 ft.( dark as a night dive)

We encountered a lot of trash, very few fish and quite a few crawfish. The bottom was composed of the worst smelling mud ( worse than Perch Lake in Santa Rosa NM). I could smell it through my regulator it was so bad. After cutting my buddy out of some 20lb test fishing line, we both decided it was time to surface.

We surfaced and lugged our gear back up the cliff. We didn't dive it again, but I would do it again with a better flashlight and wearing my buddy's gear LOL.

Definitely a memorable dive for my log book and not for everyone.
