This is an example of the inflatable Type V PFD referred to earlier. It automatically inflates when it hits the water, or it can be inflated manually by pulling the cord. The link is to the Stearns website that shows these PFDs. Note that there are several models available. We use these for all boat operators, shore-based line tenders, and other non-water-entry personnel. Because they have little bulk, especially when compared to traditional PFDs, our personnel love them.....

Hope this helps!

That's similar to what I wore when I was in the Coast Guard. We also wear that on our PD's Danzig boat. Even with body armor and your Sam Brown belt with gear you are able to come up and stay afloat easliy.

Many are available that are manual inflate only. Those without the cartridge could be worn under dive gear safely, I believe......I don't know if they will upright an unconsious wearer, but at least we can get people to wear something.

They will not upright an uncouncious wearer

This should sum it up.

One thing to remember is that a PFD, no matter how good or bad is no better than the boats anchor if the people onboard don't know how to use it.

We see it all the time. New cheap-o PFD's still sealed in the original plastic with the tags still zip tied on them, the buckles still hooked up and stuffed into some forgotten place onboard.

But they sure can reach the beer in a hurry.

those are nice for interisland!

That is a good webpage, simple and easy to remember. Interesting I heard not too long back about some drowned boaters when they came across the overturned hull they saw the floatation jackets in the original unopened packaging floating near the boat ... that would be an especially sad irony.
