Don't sign Traveler's Checks with a Green Pen!

I thought everyone knew it had to be in black or blue ink. I can't tell you why, but even 25 years ago that was the rule.

Our solution is good ol' cash. We don't carry around much, but hit the ATM's when we need some. The exchange rate is great and our bank has very low fees for overseas withdrawals. Most restaurants and other small businesses we go to don't accept TC's, so cash is king. The only thing we use them for is paying for a week's diving.

Also another good rule is if you're using the new gel ink pens, be sure you only buy the "check safe" ink. Those don't allow for the "washing" of the checks which can then be re-used for fraud.

Also, when using TC's in Cozumel, be VERY careful on HOW and WHERE you sign your signature. Banks can be very very picky on just how similar the signatures are and will decline cheques if they are signed on the wrong line. SS

Au contraire. La Choza is the only restaurant I know of on Cozumel that does not accept travelers' checques. There may be others, but over the years I have used TC's at Sonora, Pancho's, Capi Navegante, La Perlita, El Moro, all the Missions, Pepe's, La Veranda, La Morena, Mescalito's, Chen Rio, Paradise Cafe, Playa Bonita, Coconuts, and others with nary a batting of the eye. I use them for the hotel bill, diving and fishing as well. Refusal of travelers' cheques on Cozumel is the exception rather than the rule.

Agreed. I've used Traveler's Checks there for years and I don't think anyone has ever turned it down.

El Pique and la Sera don't take them, either, nor do the paleterias we frequent. I understand that lots of places may take them. It's just that most of the places *we* go don't.
