Kim:
Well, funny you should mention that......

I live in a country that has some of the strictest environmental laws on the planet, On top of that they're pretty much leading the world in fish conservation techniques through farming etc.......not too shabby! :eyebrow:

:D

Aquaculture? Oh man, how can you destroy all that coastal land and habitat and say you're conserving? :D (before anyone jumps me on this, look at my profile)

but seriously, Japan does have strict laws....at home, but they export cars (and have industry) all over that don't have the same anti pollution devices. I can't ship my Toyota from Belize to the US because it won't pass THEIR restrictions on exhaust emissions.

Wow, did someone not get enough sleep last night? You're coming off as a little cranky there Kim.
I agree with you that we could all be doing more, and I commend you for the contributions you and your wife are making. But it seems a little unfair to chastise X for simply pointing out what IMHO is an uplifting article. It may be a small step, but at least it's a step in the right direction.

I live in a country that has some of the strictest environmental laws on the planet, from separate rubbish recycling, taxes on electrical and mechanical goods disposal, emissions controls for cars etc etc. In fact my wife is the Local Government Environmental officer for this area......I'm fairly sure we do our share! ;)

On top of that they're pretty much leading the world in fish conservation techniques through farming etc.......not too shabby! :eyebrow:

So what do you do except for posting on internet boards?

Never mind - it's probably quite a bit.

It's a pity that on average your countrymen don't do the same, or for that matter most of the people in Australia....

ps. by the way......we don't eat whale either! :D

Kim...you are starting this country bashing again. Funny how it all starts with you? Additionally, diversion is unbecoming. Come on' - do something other than peck away.

I'll answer your question. I was a former Greenpeacer. You know that already. I donate $. I create programs to educate the public about the environment. So sit down ...please. X

Lol, slightly off topic and I don't know if this has already been posted but just found it then.

Kim:
Yes...Aussies are great! After the US they are the highest per capita producers of CO2 emissions on the planets.
!

Ken, mate - that CO2 comes from all the bubbles in the beer we drink down here.....

Mr.X:

Don’t worry - Kims a pom, and as such is trying to hide the fact that secretly he wishes he was Australian. :D

Now back to whales - they taste good don't they? I like the proactive stance these guys are taking.

Cheers,
Rohan.

Kim, could you tell us why do you do all those things?

I'm serious. Have you ever thought of why you do it?

Because I care about our environment. That's why it annoys the crap out of me when people concentrate on the little things, while totally ignoring the huge!
It's obvious to anyone who cares to check what is causing the major damage to our planet....and believe me, it's not a few people who kill a few whales - even though the 'cuddly' factor plays very well. It's ALL of us and the way we live....our lifestyle choices....our selfishness....our insistence on consuming resources even though we know they're limited. Our 'grab what you can while you can' attitude.

Concentrating on minor issues like whales lost to whaling when many thousands more are dying due to krill movements in the Antarctic due to global warming is distracting and simply allows people who are contributing to the overall problem to feel good about themselves.

You want to know what impresses me? Richard Branson announced today that he's donating the entire profits from Virgin Air & Railways over the next three years (estimated around 7 billion dollars) to the fight against global warming. Now THAT'S something worth making a thread about IMO.

You want to save whales and other animals? Learn to burn less oil, use less consumables, and interact with our planet in a less rapacious way.

By the way - the organization supported in the first post the 'Sea Shepherds Conservation Society' - use actual violence which can get people killed in their campaigns.
You want to support that?

Sorry....not me.....

I think fingers could be pointed at almost every developed country for past and present actions that have harmed our common habitat, Earth. However the posts in this thread have gone too far beyond the topic and the discussion should be split off into a separate thread IMHO.

I think we can applaud the efforts of the Aussies, the Japanese and Sir Branson... as well as point out many failings by them as well as the rest of us. It would be nice to stick to the topic raised in the initiation of this thread by Mr. X. and carry on the rest of the discussion in a new thread.

I know I, for one, don't do enough on either issue.

My favorite motto.

"Think Globally, Act Locally."
