Everyone who has this big fear of DIR, just do some reading. The information is very helpful even if you never plan to go that rout. Just having the knowledge to make informed desicions would be better then not having it I would think.

When I first started diving (not to long ago) and decided on an air2 , a DIR diver POLITELY pointed out the potential problems with this. Of course I didnt listen. I had to find out for myself. I have not run into this rude and arrogent bunch that seems to be the cause of so much discontent. Have only gotten good advice and respectful suggestions. Most of which turned out to be accurate.

What a great marketing concept: create an idea with a controversial title and allow people to argue about in every related chatroom and forum on the internet, exposing it to thousands of people. That's a lot of press. Especially when everybody keeps saying the same things over and over and over and over and over....

Genius.

Wow, what a convoluted thread.
And all along I thought DIR diving was just diving with a broken steak knife.
Go figure. :D

He, he. We're a bunch of anal-retentive, book-reading, class-taking, opinionated people who unfortunately don't get to dive enough (which would be every day in the ideal world). Information we have plenty of. Have you read the fundies book? You sound like an ideal candidate to take the class.

I don't think it is fear which inspires these threads. Maybe boredom?

I want to go diving, or at least take a ride in a spaceship.

Cant say I have and I am less then ideal canidate. I do agree on many of the concepts tho.

GUE recommends JetFins or Turtles, no split fins.
Apollo makes split fins.

GUE is not endorsing Apollo fins, therefore anyone associated with Apollo would NOT want to see GUE more widespread.

Is this a difficult concept?
I thought it was basic marketing/supply and demand stuff.

Pennypue: On this day @ Point Lobos I was actually diving with a pair of Apollo Prestige polyurethane fins-We sold the molds to Lamar Hires @ DiveRite when the bio-fins were introduced-they just happened to be the fins in the trunk of the car @ the time. This was not about Apollo or split fins etc. It was just about attitude and disrespect for others. I was not personally insulted that day. I just overheard a few meatheads carping on other divers using terms such as "Strokes and Jokes". I just asked these fellows how many dives they had and how long they had been diving. I do not know if they are GUE trained. I never asked. What I have learned from this thread is that real GUE trained divers do not act like that. When I saw all that "tech gear" I thought it was overkill for the site and the conditions. I've since learned that "work ups" and using the same gear configurations makes a lot of sense. I think GUE has a lot to contribute. In any case, this really has nothing to do with Apollo. I'm just a diver and I used my real name. I don't care if you are GUE/PADI/NAUI/TDI/IDEA etc.
Just go diving.

even if he wasnt "DIR", he was still an egotistical jackass
somthing about diving just brings out that kind of stuff in people, has nothing to do with DIR

I just overheard a few meatheads...

The people you object to refer to some divers as strokes, you demonstrate your superior maturity by calling them meatheads...ok, I think we see where you're justified in your actions.

I have on several occasions seen silly decisions defended as not DIR including a friend who refused to do all expense paid 'bunny dives' in hawaii because he couldn't get the right gear. That said a vast majority of the DIR divers I know are friendly, helpfull, and skillfull. I can and have learned from them, and will continue to.

It is not that being DIR makes a diver a jerk, just that some jerks are attracted to DIR as another way to... well feel superior. This is not unlike many other endevors, where some 'meatheads' get carried away, and become rightious *********s. Dont blame DIR for their attatudes.

I suggest, even if you don't want to do the whole GUI thing, that there is a lot to learn from them. Even if you don't want to go the whole way.
