Don't be going around dissing country:

My dad chased monsters from the dark,
He checked underneath my bed.
An' he could lift me with one arm,
Way up over top his head.
He could loosen rusty bolts
With a quick turn of his wrench.
He pulled splinters from his hand,
And never even flinched.
In thirteen years I'd never seen him cry,
But the day that grandpa died, I realized:

Unsinkable ships sink.
Unbreakable walls break.
Sometimes the things you think would never happen,
Happen just like that.
Unbendable steel bends.
If the fury of the wind is unstoppable,
I've learned to never underestimate,
The impossible

An' then there was my junior year,
Billy had a brand new car.
It was late, the road was wet,
I guess the curve was just too sharp.
I walked away without a scratch.
They brought the helicopter in.
Billy couldn't feel his legs.
They said he'd never walk again.
But Billy said he would an' his mom and daddy prayed,
An' the day we graduated, he stood up to say:

Unsinkable ships sink.
Unbreakable walls break.
Sometimes the things you think would never happen,
Happen just like that.
Unbendable steel bends.
If the fury of the wind is unstoppable,
I've learned to never underestimate,
The impossible

So don't tell me that it's over.
Don't give up on you and me.
'Cause there's no such thing as hopeless,
If you believe:

Unsinkable ships sink.
Unbreakable walls break.
Sometimes the things you think would never happen,
Happen just like that.
Unbendable steel bends.
If the fury of the wind is unstoppable,
I've learned to never underestimate,
The impossible

A recent thread in the New Divers/Beginners section made me think about a recent issue I had on my last family vacation. Long story short the all inclusive resort we stayed at in Turks & Caicos had scuba as an included activity. There were about 3 boats that went out in the mornings for 2 tanks dives. One rather obnoxious family from Texas during the surface interval brought out a Bluetooth speaker and just blasted music. I found it rather annoying since their choice of music was country. I really, really don't care for country music. Luckily I had ear buds for my iPhone and tried to drown out the speaker with moderate success.

I realize others may not like my choice of music either but at least I don't subject everyone on the boat to what's on my play list. I just thought it was very inconsiderate. I'm on vacation too.

I'm sorry but a dislike for county music doesn't cut it and I don't consider myself a fan of the genre. As things go it's mainstream enough. If you don't have enough bandwidth in your tastes to let it be part of your experience perhaps you need to be finding a more private setting for your vacation. If it was "blasted" to the point of distortion then I might try asking if they could back it down a bit so you could enjoy it. I can understand where you may have had your heart set on some solitude but how realistic is that on a boatload of vacationers? If it weren't the music it would be the boisterous life of the party dude with the thundering voice.

What if it was two speakers playing different music?

You know, Texas is nearly the size of Europe and has one of the largest economies in the world in it's on right and could easily be a country to itself. I am sure there are people from Texas amongst it's hugely diverse population, who are not rude and ignorant.

I am not against telling people to turn their music off. In fact KOFF is my favorite radio station, I have no sound track for my life, I really guess I have no interest in listening to music, especially that of somebody else, tell them to turn it off.

Even if I liked the type of music being played I might not want to hear it when I am trying to relax, enjoy the sea and beach, and have a quiet conversation. That is just rude behavior; doesn't matter the variety of music being played.

That's a cacophony and the operator should step in to prevent mutiny.

Public place = headphones. Just common courtesy.

Now you're (or they) out of the space of community and missing out on even more. Incidental helpful information could be missed and the shared experience is also disrupted. To each his own but isolation is a last resort.

You're not on the "W" side of the country?

To some people the sound of one loud stereo playing music they don't like, competing with the sounds of the wind, the lapping of waves or even the dulcet tones of a properly tuned pair of Yamaha 90s is "cacophony".

If you wanna listen to your music, wear your headphones.

I knew a guy who, when his neighbours did that "too loud" thing, would aim his speakers at the neighbours' place, put on Nina Hagen and turn it to 11. Had a decent sound system, too. He would then go have a beer outside on the other side of the house. When asked why he'd answer "I'm not that big a fan of Nina Hagen". The moral of the story is, I don't believe the neighbours ever got the message.
