I am getting married in mexico in a few weeks and I just got a phone call from a friend in tears saying she could not make the trip. Long story short: when she was born her parents couldn't decide on a name so when they left the hospital her birth certificate read "unnamed female". Of course they named her and filled out the appropriate paperwork and thought it was a done deal. She had to send away for a certified copy to go the wedding because she had lost her original. When she got it is read "unnamed female" and the state of Utah claims they do not have the paperwork on file and it will take 6 weeks. She also does not have a passport. She is supposed to be on a plane May 21 st. She has a Washington state ID and military ID. Any ideas of who to contact or what can be done to get her into Mexico and back to the states? Please help.

I was doing some climbing down there in 1996 and did not have a passport either. I was in the military but it did not effect the paperwork (at that time... might be different post 9-11)

I could not get any help at all from any US office I went to but the Mexican Embassy in TX was very helpful and I had a travel visa in about 15 minutes.

I would investigate getting assistance from the Mexican government if you have access...

Hope everything works out and congrats!!

If she has a voter registration card with name and current address, that would suffice in place of a birth certificate. Requirements are proof of identity (Driver's License) and proof of citizenship (birth certificate or voter registration card).

After she gets back, it would probably be a good idea to:

A) Get the birth certificate thing taken care of.
B) Get a passport. It saves you a lot of hassle.

Don't know where you are located but I know in large metropolitan areas like say...Dallas, there are passport services that give 1 WEEK turnaround times even starting from scratch! And given what all they have to do its not that expensive! It's like a 25-50 surcharge for the FAST service. Since it's still a couple of weeks until she comes, I would try this option ~ those services often have connections with the right folks to get things done in a hurry without much hassle on your part!!
There is one in DFW called PASSPORT EXPRESS
just look in the yellow pages for your area ` I'm sure you'll find somthing similar!

N.E.W. once bubbled...
Remember, its not only getting out. Sooner or later, you'll need to get back in.

I've always considered getting TO Cozumel WAY more important than getting back home again!

If she booked her travel thru an agency, then she should call them for the specific requirements. Usually, if you use the voter's registration card, you'll need another secondary ID, too. Her agency or the airline she is flying on can give her details.

Good luck!!

I just applied for a "Rush" US Passport. It costs $60 extra (plus 2 prepaid Fedex envelopes). From Canada the processing time is 5 - 7 business days (not the 3 business days as advertised). The US consulate here in Vancouver informed me that Mexican Customes will accept either a) Drivers Licence and Birth Certificate or b) a passport. I would check with Mexican Customs and US Immigration prior to departure if you plan to use a different set of identification. Being stuck at a border is no fun at all.

Best of luck!!

I would caution you that if you travel into Mexico using a birth certificate and drivers license that the birth certificate must be original or a certified copy with the state's raised seal on it. a simple photocopy will not work. was in Laredo few years ago and some guy from New York had only a photocopy. they would not accept it and he could not get in(past the border zone which extends about 20 miles into the country). his passport was in his bank box in NY. Didnt do him much good there.
