Mislav, I got some great advice when I posted about my mask clearing issues. The best piece was that you don't have to clear the mask in one blast -- Keep your breathing normal, and just exhale through your nose at the same rate you normally would exhale anyway. It may take two breaths to get all the water out, but you don't lose your buoyancy, and you don't run into the problem that you're breaking the mask seal somewhere in overvigorous attempts to clear. It's amazing what a steady trickle of air into the mask can do.

Thanks TS&M, I'll try your advice. Even now it takes three or four blows to completely clear my mask. If you make it in two blows while exhaling normally, there must be a leak when I do it. More practice is definitely needed and I plan to brush up on this skill to perfection. I'll get it right or end up in "accidents and incidents". :D

My wife and I have been diving for a number of years and we still do our own shake down dive when we go on vacation. It is far easier to fix a problem with gear when you are on the beach rather than when you are on the dive boat , also it does not interfere with other divers and their valuable vacation time. Even though I was an instructor for many years, I still do small practice drills that help keep me sharp after many months of not diving; buoancy skills without fins ,spare-air ascents (yes I own one) buddy breathing while no longer taught serves to make you comfortable with your partner and sometimes I just lay heavy on the sand bottom and watch small stuff for my own pleasure. So as far as the "is it done" question, remember, all the scuba god stories are just so much bull****. The only one us older divers want you to impress, is yourself. Welcome to diving Scott Enloe

Yea i practice them when I do tech diving with the s-drill. but even in ow we all use 7ft hoses just incase one of starts to get low on air we hand off the 7ft so we can keep on diving. (usually one of us has doubles on, thats who we go to). there was one time that i was low (1000psi) went to my buddies 7ft hose, and then the divemaster saw us on arrive at the anchor line sharing air, got all freaked out and asked to see our spg when we got on the boat. we then explained what we did. after explaining it we laughed about it. but yes practice is good

Mislav, it takes me at least two to three breaths to clear my mask. I'm usually always stuffy because of sinus and allergy problems so it takes me longer to clear my mask. Well, at least that is what I'm telling myself the problem is. :D I have one mask that leaks a lot when I wear my beanie so I get lots of practice clearing it. Last weekend i finally decided to retire the worn out beanie. Too much air was getting in the hood, not venting enough thru holes and displacing my mask.

Practice makes perfect !!!, when I finally went full face, I worked with it out of the water for several hours, got it in winter time of course, during the 1st dive at the end of the dive, I asked my buddy who is also an instructor, that I wanted to go back down and practice a ditch and don to my spare mask. We were below the hole, and my buddy was right next to me, so went for it. the time at home certainly helped. I had more of a problem unzipping my thigh pocket than anything else. My new drysuit has velcro for the thigh pocket. But it's best to try something new with a buddy, after you practice enough to feel comfortable in trying. Needless to say, the ditch went perfect, got to my alt air source as planned w/no problems, then spend about a minute getting my spare mask out, once out tho, popped it on and cleared it w/no problems. This summer I practiced in the pool and shallow solo dives in the quarry, a ditch and don of the full mask, this encompassed using alt air while prepping the full mask to put it back on, then clearing that (easy just hit purge!). Now I am fully comfortable in case I would ever get my mask knocked off, and I will continue to practice these skill along with others when I have spare time on a dive. Never hurts, you do things until they become 2nd nature, and then you re-visit those skills to remind yourself occasionally.

you have a great idea in practicing, alot of the posts here reflect that too. Divers who think they know it all and wont learn anything else, are not realistic. You learn on every dive, sometimes it's new, sometimes it's a reminder. but you are always learning.

Congrats on your OW !

Thanks all for the replies so far. It's great to know this forum is really an haven for noobies with questions. I really enjoy learning from your experiences.

I had my first 2 dives post my OW yesterday on the NE coast of Taiwan. Blue Sky, 28 deg above the water, 24 in the water, great vis.
I was a fantastic feeling to be cruising canyons and walls with no other purpose apart of relaxing and enjoying it.
:D

Just curious ... where do you dive in NE Taiwan? Keelung? Yehliu?

I wasn't a diver when I was there, but Yehliu looks a bit rough for it (stunningly beautiful, though).

Please post some trip reports ... I've gotta go back someday. Maybe spend some time in Kenting too ... :D

If you go towards Yilan from Keelung, there is the tiny port village of Bitou. Just beyond that village is a tunnel on the coastal road, and then you are in the first of a couple of big bays called LongDong.
I don't know if it's the best diving in the NE area, but there sure are a lot of divers going in/out. Yesterday I reckon there was 20+ cars/vans in the car park associated with divers at any given time. I think people are making the most of the extended summer conditions.
I believe Kenting is great, and Green Island is awesome. It looks like I am going to be here for at least another year or so, so the plan is to enjoy as much diving as possible while I live near warm waters in Asia....:)

I practiced removing the mask totall manay times just after certification. That is something you can do even while snorkeling to get the feel of breathing without a mask on.
