I have a big diving vacation coming up in 10 days and I feel super healthy now, but really don't want to get sick. Do you give any credence to Ecchinacia, Airborne, Super-C, or other Keep-You-Healthy-Drugs out there?

First line of defense: Wash hands often and use anti-bacterial solutions. :thumb:

Hi RumBum,

The limited research to date indicates that products like echinacea, vit C and Airborne (which contains both, plus many other compounds) do little or nothing to prevent catching a cold or the flu, although taken as directed they seem to do no harm. DandyDon's suggestions are far more likely to provide a degree of protection.

Your best bets at prevention include: Avoiding persons who are sneezing, coughing or otherwise apparently infected with a virus or other contagious pathogen; washing hands religiously, but not with antibiotic soap, which only breeds resistance; using disinfectants on kitchen and bathroom surfaces; replacing standard home heating and cooling systems filters with high-efficiency particulate-arresting (HEPA) filters.

Also, follow common sense steps for staying healthy such as getting proper sleep, eating a balanced diet and drinking plenty of water.

Have a great trip.

Of course Don and Doc are right, but:

For prevention, I think I’ve had success with a saline nasal spray before traveling on planes with their re-circulated air and germs.

This might be psychosomatic, but I don’t care since I think it helps.

Airborne made me sick to my stomach.
