Have read quite a few threads about Truk. Am planning a group trip and wondering whether experienced non-tech divers will enjoy it as much as the tech divers.

When I went there, I had not yet had any real tech training. It was one of the best dive trips of my life at that point.

Anyone who enjoys diving wrecks will enjoy Truk. Most of the wrecks are shallow enough for any diver, and the superstructures are very interesting, so no penetration is needed. Because you are on very intact wrecks, navigation is easy. If you are going on the Truk Oddysey, there are guides available. The group with me was a mix of experienced technical divers and recreational divers. Everyone had a great time.

There is nearly 70 years of beautiful invertebrate growth -soft & hard corals- along with wonderful abundant schooling tropical fish life, on the more popular Truk Wrecks at recreational depths (i.g. Fujikawa Maru; Shinkoku Maru etc) than on any of the other "technical wrecks" at 39m & deeper. . .

Unless you're a gear head/WWII naval history nut, there's really no reason to penetrate the wrecks --there's plenty of neat stuff to see on the outside!

Truk Lagoon is a great place to go to dive wrecks that are within recreational diving range. You will love it!

Cheers,
Mitch

I'm not a tech diver but still enjoyed Truk. Also, I'm more into fish and corals than wrecks and there was plenty of growth on the wrecks to keep me happy. Many of the wrecks are also big enough that you can penetrate a portion of the way without feeling claustrophobic. One caution, though, most of the dives are deep. I was on the Truk Oddysey and Deep Water Dan is correct about not being constrained by rec diving standards. That is not to say that the Oddysey was not safety conscious. Diving within your personal limits was emphasized, but the guides were there to help you safely expand your personal limits.

We weren't tech when we went there and so loved it. It gave us the desire to do tech. We are now going back for maybe 2-3 weeks to dive every wreck a number of times.
