I've got a new Oceanic reg and I need to install the octo and the wireless transmitter.. the manual says to lube the treads and o-rings with MCG111 if nitrox is used, else silicon grease.

I'm not using nitrox now but wouldn't rule it out in the future, EAN32 or 36 anyway. Some posts said the silicon is good up to 40% O2 anyway. Others said no need to lube the threads at all, just the o-ring? Now I couldn't find a definitive answer on this on the forum.

thanks

If you are going to go for nitrox in the future, you will eventually want to add a small container of O2 compatible lube to your save-a-dive kit. In the mean time, you could attach that hose to the first stage leaving the connection dry. The torque is quite light so, hopefully, the o-ring will not bind. (The threads on that end of the LP hose are protected by the o-ring so no lube should be necessary on the threads.) Better yet, use a little O2 compatible spit on the o-ring to insure it seats properly. I have never seen any nitrox divers with their mouths on fire yet.:D

Using O2 compatible lube is a good habit to get into. It's not so much of an issue with a reg that will be exposed to 32/36%, but a tank that is filled via partial pressure blending is exposed to 100% and therefore more critical. By using only O2 lube you lessen the risk of cross contamination, ie, you lube your reg with silicone and then change out a valve on your tank with the silicone still on your hands.

As AWAP stated, I too have never seen a nitrox diver with their mouth on fire...

When you get into nitrox, you will have to have your reg O2 cleaned anyway so I would use reg o-ring silicone lube....that's what I do. I have seen people lube their noses with vaseline while they have an 02 nasal cannula in their nose!:shakehead: Go figure!:) Tim

Most new regs, and all new Oceanics AFAIK, are approved for Nitrox use up to 40% right out of the box. The only reason to O2 clean a reg is if you are going to use it for O2 percentages in the 40-100% range. In that case the reg is exposed to higher percentages and all components must be cleaned and O2 compatible. If you are going to use standard recreational mixes as you mention 32 or 36% there is no need to have your reg cleaned.
