The Crotch Strap ties the Hogarthian Harness System together. Without the crotch strap, you have a sloppy harness. It results in the equipment shifting up and down and from side to side.

I would say that you do not NEED the cotch strap but having it certainly add more stability to the setup.

Ok so we have established that a crotch strap would be best. I have plenty of webbing lying around everywhere. Can someone point me in the right direction on how to rig it?

If you don't sew, you can make a crotch strap using a couple weight belt keepers.

The first keeper is used to secure the webbing to the bottom of the back plate. I depends on the webbing and the keeper just how you weave it. With soft edge webbing I use a "Plain" keeper becasue they are a little bigger than the serrated keepers and you can pass the webbing thru them twice.

Some people add a wire dring under the rear keeper, the so called "butt dring", some do not.

The front loop of the crotch needs to be large enough for the entire waist belt buckle to pass thru easily. Here again some place a dring under the keeper, some do not.

I'd set up the front loop first and adjust the lenght with the rear keeper.

If you sew, or have access to shoemaker for example, you can sew the front loop, again with or without the Dring.

The rear is usually secured with a keeper, to provide adjustment. As an alternative you can burn a hole through both halfs of the webbing and use a pan head bolt and nylok nut with a couple washers to secure the webbing to the plate.

I'd suggest allowing for some adjustment, at least until you're sure you have it where you want it.

Regards,

Tobin

BTW the front dring adds a little mass, which is quite helpful if you are donning your gear in the water. It makes the crotch strap hang straight down from the plate.

I am diving a parachute config (essentially two straps...why...well, because I can.) and find it a lot more comfortable and stable than a single crotch strap.

Patrick's statement above is correct IMHO, but the effect of movement is dictated by your personal chest morphology. Me, I am no longer the inverted cone that I used to be. Especially after the holidays. =(

DON'T use that webbing that you "have lying around everywhere".
If it is standard weight belt stuff it is going to be WAY too stiff. It won't be comfortable and it will abrade your exposure suit. It just won't work worth a hoot.

Do yourself a favor and just buy one from DSS or Oxy. They don't cost much, they're already rigged with quality hardware, and they use the right material.

Almost every BC has a tendency to ride up on the diver when they are vertical. When a crotch strap is used that tendency is eliminated. If it's uncomfortable, loosen it up, it doesn't need to be tight to do it's job. Also when you get inverted (say when you're lobstering), the crotch strap keeps the whole BC close your body where it belongs. Yeah it is one more piece of gear to deal with when suiting up but the value outweighs the con. FWIW find a system that meets your needs and get comfortable with it but always look for ways to improve on it. Also for wreck or cave diving the crotch strap is a required piece of equipment in an emergency especially when in close quarters.
