As of the 2011 PADI Instructor Manual, "internship" is not longer mentioned, only practical application.
Pg 96 "PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Have divemaster candidates successfully complete the following practical skills, workshops and practical assessments. Combine the skills with workshops and practical assessments as appropriate." I found no distinction between using real or simulated student divers during these assessments.

Duration of the course can vary on many factors, not just internship vs. practical application. Consider the experience & quality of the instructor(s), the experience and personal dive skills level of the candidate, the number of candidates in the group, locale/dive site selection/weather, schedule intensity (combinations of morning/afternoon/evening sessions), just to name a few.

Referencing Page 103 of the PADI Instructor manual;

Practical Assessment
Have divemaster candidates work with student divers during Practical Assessments 1-3. If this is not feasible, role playing is acceptable. Have divemaster candidates work with certified divers during Practical Assessment 4.

The requirements for these 4 exercises can be met by either role-playing with other divers, or by having the candidate assist on actual classes with real students, which is what most people refer to as an Internship. Assisting on real classes is the preferred method to meet the requirements.
