You can become a master diver without ever taking a diving specialty.

How in the world do you do that? Thru Padi to become a MD you have to take 5 specialty courses. So how would you get around it? Another agency? Just a curious mind wanting to know.

A guy at work bragged he was about to finish up his MD certification. I asked him how many doubles dives, deco dives, wreck or cave penetration dives, trimix dives, rebreather dives, etc. he had. The more I asked, the more I got the "deer in the headlights" look. When the final answer was 1 (for the time he poked his head into a wreck), I asked if someone at the top of the game, a MASTER, should have some experience with those?

I can think of two non-fluff PADI speciality courses, Nitrox and Equipment Specialist and two that are almost non-fluff if you really need the help: PPB and Drysuit.

I think he means just by diving your @$$ off... I'd say after 500-1000 dives of varying conditions and places you're probably a master diver..

I think there is at least one more but off the top of my head that's 5.

Cavern. Wreck, deep, and ice can be non-fluff if done right. The 2 rebreather courses.

Oh! Gosh, none of those courses sound like fun. I'd want to get down & dirty & get some dives in. And being a girl, Equipment Specialist seems too much like Auto Mechanics, Just teasing guys, don't kill me :blinking:

Yea but it's a big selling point. I can teach one DEMP class in 4-8 hours depending on how many students and hand out 3 specialties to each of them. You could litterally do all 5 specialties on a Saturday without ever leaving the shop.

I forgot about ice and the rebreather ones. If "if done right" implies the quality of the instructor bringing up the quality of the course by adding value to it then I'll leave them in the fluff column since that's unpredictable for most students.

Wow, Impressive, but a little scary. Seems to me that those that want those quickie courses done in a day just want the MD behind their name rather than the experience. I'd rather earn it, but that's just me.

Equipment Specialist would be a class for me if it would teach me to work on my regulator. Being female, I've always been averse to taking things apart without instructions.
