Coming in on this late, but training progression comparison...

PADI:
Master Diver (5 different dives, no test, card)
DM (professional, where the majority of knowledge develpment takes place)

NAUI:
Master Diver (8 different dives, test, where the majority of knowledge development happens in the NAUI progression)
DM (professional level)

The NAUI Master Diver seems to be a great program for the diver who wants to be all they can be, but not go pro.

PADI requires 5 different SPECIALTIES. All of them, off the top of my head require at least 2 dives. Also, 50 logged dives and Rescue Diver Cert are required.

PADI MSD does not say you are a great diver. It says you have invested in learning about diving. I am doing rescue right now, and it is a good course for teaching decision making and helping divers in distress.

Their are "easy" and "hard" ways to do MSD. Whether you do "fluff" specialties or "techi-ish" specialties, the MSD cert means you have taken time to learn more and demonstrate you knowledge to an instructor.

When I finish Rescue Diver and, therefor, MSD will I be a better diver? Probably in some ways, but only because of finishing Rescue and having added to my knowledge. Will I have "Mastered" SCUBA diving??? No. But I had fun doing the certs, and learned more about diving.

Isn't recreational diving about having fun?

IF I pursue more training it will either be along tech lines, or professional lines. You know how I will make that decision? I will base it on what is fun to me.

So, PADI MSD is not the end all and be all of diving. But it is a fun way to learn more about diving. So there is nothing worth ripping on or getting upset about. Just like OW certs, it isn't the agency that makes the course, it is the instructors and what you put into it.

Peace out!

I think there is at least one more but off the top of my head that's 5.

So, how do you do Rescue Diver witout doing a dive??? Just curious.

Thalassamania:
some others would say "well done" to (e.g., a fundies class, an LA County Advanced Course, a NAUI Master Diver class, etc.).

Um, actually the Diving in the Kool-Aid course is a separate specialty...

It's all in the flavour that you choose.

I'm thinking, the most appropriate would be Sour Grape.

You can drink whatever you like.

IS it worth the money?

Maybe there's a bit missing from this class (oh, it's not a class..ooops :D ) , or should a "Master Diver" be required to know a lot more?

Not really bashing PADI, just their "MD" card and the "prestiege" and knowledge that should go with the title of a MD. You can actually "get one step closer to PADI Master Scuba Diver" by taking the "Double-Dome Distinctive Specialty Course" (HydroOptix Mask). :shakehead

Maybe you should read the entire thread?

No, I've already pointed out that you can get 5 specialties without a dive on any of them.

No, for some on this board it's all about proving your superiority over other divers. Case in point:

Years Certified: Ten or More Years
# of Logged Dives: 3000+
Dive History: 10,000+ Dives, 8,000+ hours, 3000 feet (submersible)
Equipment Setup: Polaris Dry Suit Mares Titianium Abyss w/ Ruby Seat & long hose Fenzy Mares Genius Farallon Mask, Snorkel and fins. Seaquest Weight Belt USD Triple 30s w/custom harness Oceanic Omega auxilliary Randal Knife Sunnto compass

This is is from the profile of the guy who started a rant because a PADI shop wouldn't let his underage son dive from their boat and is on the instructor list with a false name.

You misread. It takes 14 dives to become a rescue diver. 50 to be an MSD. But you don't have to do a single specialty dive to get the card.
