jagfish:Coming in on this late, but training progression comparison...
PADI:
Master Diver (5 different dives, no test, card)
DM (professional, where the majority of knowledge develpment takes place)
NAUI:
Master Diver (8 different dives, test, where the majority of knowledge development happens in the NAUI progression)
DM (professional level)
The NAUI Master Diver seems to be a great program for the diver who wants to be all they can be, but not go pro.
PADI requires 5 different SPECIALTIES. All of them, off the top of my head require at least 2 dives. Also, 50 logged dives and Rescue Diver Cert are required.
PADI MSD does not say you are a great diver. It says you have invested in learning about diving. I am doing rescue right now, and it is a good course for teaching decision making and helping divers in distress.
Their are "easy" and "hard" ways to do MSD. Whether you do "fluff" specialties or "techi-ish" specialties, the MSD cert means you have taken time to learn more and demonstrate you knowledge to an instructor.
When I finish Rescue Diver and, therefor, MSD will I be a better diver? Probably in some ways, but only because of finishing Rescue and having added to my knowledge. Will I have "Mastered" SCUBA diving??? No. But I had fun doing the certs, and learned more about diving.
Isn't recreational diving about having fun?
IF I pursue more training it will either be along tech lines, or professional lines. You know how I will make that decision? I will base it on what is fun to me.
So, PADI MSD is not the end all and be all of diving. But it is a fun way to learn more about diving. So there is nothing worth ripping on or getting upset about. Just like OW certs, it isn't the agency that makes the course, it is the instructors and what you put into it.
Peace out!
