Ummmm....not to dis or anything, but what the heck is a "shark specialty"?

Is that a shark feeding dive?

spankey:
I have just started my Master Divers. I am doing alot of other things with it, so at the end I will have the following
- Master Divers
- ASHI first aid
- Shark speciality
- Nitrox
- Deep speciality
- Night speciality
- Search & Recovery speciality
- Advanced Rescue speciality
- DAN Oxygen Provider
- DAN Marine Life Injuries

I feel this is a good platform to then become a DM and then Instructor. The more you have behind your name the more you know and you then are able to teach others better etc etc

BTW these are all NAUI

I had a lawyer diver say becoming a DM with a moderate or greater net worth was an invitation to a lawsuit if an accident happened on your dive. He said if you were in the group and you were not even acting as a DM and something happens you will likely be sued if it appears you have some $$$.

I was told this about 10 years ago so things may have changed since then. Any lawyers want to chime in ?

That's one of the reason's dive professionals are required to carry professional liability insurance.

MarkUK:
Take a boat with an Advanced Open Water diver with 450 dives, a Divemaster with 65 dives, and a Master Scuba Diver who has been diving 20 years but only has 150 logged dives – I know who I would rather dive with...

Mark

This one's easy. Go with the one with the biggest boat.

You are defenately right;)
spankey:
what ever you do dont listen to James. I think he left his head at that last deco he should have done.

The Master Diver is the highest you can go before getting into leadership and has to be done before DM. Well this is the case with Naui, not sure about Padi but would think its the same.

I would say Master diver in none leadership and learning more from de course.. ...not only pay for a card.:shakehead
James Goddard:
Master Diver is a card, nothing else. You don't learn anything new you just pay for a card.James

Wrap up Master Diver and enjoy the sport.

If you think that helping other divers will be fulfilliung make yourself available to mentor other divers. A number of times I have had the priviledge of making first post certification or return to diving dives with folks and it's always a nice experience. This way you get to pick and choose who, when and where. You don't end up with a dive shop planning your life to help push students through the pipeline.

Do you have to pay the certifying agency annual dues to keep your DM certification and does that include insurance ? If you get your DM certification does that make you a dive professional on every dive, whether you like it or not ?

What if I was on a cruise in the the caribbean and went diving as a shore excursion offered by the ship but had my DM certification and someone died in my group while diving. Even though I'm just Joe cruise ship diver tourist it would seem like I would have a higher level of responsibility if I was a DM. And thats where the tort lawyers would smell blood....... especially if you had a substantial net worth.

I have thought about getting my DM just for personal achievement and to become a better and safer diver but the liability issue has kept me from it. I am by no means wealthy but I do have enough assets that could cause some lawyer to go after what I own in a lawsuit.

A lawyer once said, "anybody can sue anybody for anything" and "a crying widow with 2 small children is worth 20 expert witnesses in jury trial".

You don't have to show the DM card when diving as a tourist. I have a friend who is an instructor and he dives with his OW card. No one would know you are a DM unless you tell them.

7milehi:

YES

7milehi:
and does that include insurance
No - Ins is extra
$260 for D/M - can not conduct D/M programs only assist instructors.
$400 if you want to do D/M conducted programs - Scuba Review - Discover Scuba - Discover Local Diving - Snorkeling - Skin Diving

7milehi:

No - I have heard of D/M's diving as AOW divers on vacations

If something happens on a dive you are on the lawers will find out your highest cert level. So it doesn't matter if you only said you were open water. Of course they still have to prove you did something negligent to get anything out of ya.
