I was talking to a PADI Instructor today and she said that if you stop paying your PADI dues you can't reinstate without retaking the course. Is this true? Is it true with other agencies (SSI/NAUI) as well?

I've been out for 12 years and when I asked PADI they told me I had to redo the tests and water skills to regain my active status, along with CPR etc.

Nothing about having to retake the whole course.

It really depends on how long you are off the membership rolls.

BTW, is there some reason why you don't want to renew your membership? You can go into "non teaching status" (no current insurance) and still retain your creds. In actuality, it's the INSURANCE that's the killer moneywise; membership dues are usually a fraction of the cost.

Just some thoughts to consider...

I wasn't aware there was any timeline regarding just getting re-instated. I thought you just paid the dues when you wanted to return to active status and that was that. Am I wrong?

SubMariner is correct. I think some of it depends on what standards have changed in the interim.

I had occasion recently to write PADI about some friends who want to return to active membership. The answers were somewhat tailored to each individual's circumstance. For example, the AI had not renewed membership for 6 years and was told to audit an AI course.

I believe it depends on the certification level and time away. I had a DM a few years ago wish to get back into the ranks and was told to retake the exams and the waterskills as previously mentioned.
On the other hand an OWSI who had been out of teaching for nearly 10 years, didn't keep dues up and hadn't attended an update forum in that time period was required to redo an IDC and IE.

While retaking the exams and the waterskills sounds easy, try scoring a passing grade on the exams and high enough on the skills if you haven't been in that mode for a long time.

No, doesn't sound easy. I would imagine there are quite a few continuously active DMs who would also find it difficult.

I became a Divemaster, only to become a safer, more knowledgable diver and to be able to help in an emergency. Coming over to the "Pro" side is a lot more expensive and more liability potential. You do have to renew your card, yearly, etc. etc. It's not what I bargained for, exactly. Am I glad I went through the course? Absolutely!

If you stay in the amateur level, say, as a "Master Scuba Diver", which I was before making the jump, it's surely a lot simpler and the training is pretty good.

One thing I like about being a Divemaster, though, is when I go diving on nearly any commercial boat, they find out I'm a DM and they pretty much let me go off and do what I want (within reason). That is pretty nice, as I enjoy underwater photography and don't alway stick with a particular buddy.

Can anyone comment on NAUI's policy?

Called NAUI today. They said that you had to do an "upgrade", which consists of a $16 info pack and an open book written exam, if you've been inactive for more than a year. Less than a year there's nothing extra to be done. In both cases, obviously, you have to pay dues for the upcoming period.
